bubs_42 Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I have been thinking about moving a guitar and picking up a 70's JMP that I've been wanting for some time. If I get one who is the cat that I need to send it to to clean it up and get it up to snuff?
Jimbilly Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Where are you located? There might be somebody near you who is good.
MCChris Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 http://drfretgood.com/I used to work with the owner's wife, and they have a baby on the way, so they could use the dough, I'm sure.
bubs_42 Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Thanks Chris, i'm still scoping out prospects but I haven't ran across anything yet. I'll be sure to look into this when I find one.
Mark Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 In Oakland Cali,, Powerage (Craig Mueller).... Killer dude, great work,, worth the price to ship. In Seattle/Kitsap County.. Solderhaus,, ( cant think of his name) knows his Marshalls..Great work.. I am more partial to Powerage. Congrats on the JMP! I have a 1977 50 watt that I will never let go.
RobB Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 In Oakland Cali,, Powerage (Craig Mueller).... Killer dude, great work,, worth the price to ship. Can also vouch for Craig. Excellent work, reasonable rates and quick turnaround. Dude knows his tube amps, oh yes.
FrankieIII Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Can't imagine having to ship a Marshall head for a simple tune-up. Just call your local shops and ask who they use.
Bobby Marshall Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Can't imagine having to ship a Marshall head for a simple tune-up. Just call your local shops and ask who they use. I took my Mesa to a local authorized guy. Totally sucked. Sent to the factory, all better. I agree you can get quality service locally but I would rather have equipment serviced by someone recommended to me by someone who has had their similar equipment serviced by same person. If I were bubs I would have asked who is the "Murkat of Marshalls"®?
FrankieIII Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Can't imagine having to ship a Marshall head for a simple tune-up. Well, I wrote "Marshall" not Mesa which is a whole other story. Mesa crams so many controls, etc. into such a small area that they are usually far more difficult/complicated to diagnose/fix than old Marshalls...
bubs_42 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 I have a local guy that everyone takes their stuff to and they rave about him. I'm guessing because he is the ONLY guy in town. I took my DR Z SRZ65 there when I had it and he found after a quick check that I had a bad preamp tube. Flat rate of service $65. , not problem, but it was the extra $100 bucks he charged me for cleaning up the messy soldering that I did not ask for that tweaked me. Considering that amp had never damaged, dropped or left the studio from the guy I bought it from. He has gotten my buisness twice and I had the same results. I refuse to take anything back to him.
murkat Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Well, While I was spending time in Minnesota, these guys were it...If you consider shipping to, and closest to you so far...http://www.savageamps.com/
MCChris Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Yeah that back-door upcharging is B.S. I was offered a JCM900 SL-X 2100 head recently but the seller says it needs a retube/rebias/etc. and I just don't feel like dealing with that added expense.
bubs_42 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 I've heard mixed messages last time I was up at the 4321 Club about Savage. I remember Carfish not being too pleased with them.I'm sure if I buy and old one it will need to be serviced and up to snuff. Retube, Cap Job, cleaned and touched up. With as many amps is there out there I might be better off buying something else.
murkat Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 " I've heard mixed messages about Savage." So very true, as well as I when I was there in MN. A hit and miss. But then, I hear that from about, and just about anybody really. Just surprised that there is no vouch up in Chicago area except for Chris's recomendation, PM Hectrop? He has a few amps, and so does Stevie! They got to go somewhere with all that iron...
bubs_42 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 They both gave suggetions when I was shopping around for where to send my Egnater for Service. I'd kinda like to know where Stevie would take that Plexi for service. That one made me tingly.
