velorush Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Yes, it's been nearly a month, but I finally got a chance to watch this (a couple of times) this weekend. I thought all of it was good, but there were a couple of surprises for me that have had me scrambling on YouTube since:Frank Hannon - with all the Schon pyrotechnics to open and Watson's eight fingers on the board stuff, this guy comes out with (as far as I could tell) a simple SG, a green pedal (TS?), a white pedal (delay?) and a wah and absolutely kills! Fantastic playing, always revisiting the song's major themes. Marc Bonilla - what chops! But oh so appropriate for the song. The Gamma stuff was definitely a highlight.I really wasn't aware of either of these guys, but I've been trying to catch up since. Satch, of course, was fantastic, but I always expect that of Satch. Satch to me has always been the more accessible Vai (and I love Vai).
elduave Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 You've probably heard Frank Hannon before but didn't know it was him. Tesla had some hits, for sure. Enjoy! He's very cool.
velorush Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Tesla was one of those bands (and there were a bunch of them in the 80's) I always liked, but never got around to really checking out. For me, trying to keep up with music in the 80's was like trying to get a drink from a fire hose - there was just so much new stuff every week and I liked pretty much all of it! Watching his YouTube channel now! He actually has a great singing voice, as well (check out his cover of "Do You Feel Like We Do").Been listening to the music player on Marc Bonilla's site, as well. Wildly varying offerings there - incredibly listenable melodic shred!
Willie G. Moseley Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Nice to see Ricky Phillips having a good time. He reportedly has some collaboration recordings in the vault, some of which are not complete (i.e., he may use alternate guitarists if it sees the light of day).
dragan Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 got to see Ron in St. Louis summer of 2011, happened to be there when he had a concert downtown. he was a great player
tommy p Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 LOVED that show but I fast-forwarded through Satriani. For some reason, he just doesn't "speak" to me (neither does Steve Vai or Joe Bonamossa but I digress). On the other hand, I had heard the name Marc Bonilla over the years and never checked him out. WOW! That guy blew me away!!!
