SD P90?

Montelovesco

Question

Posted

I got that nice little Washburn Custom Shop guitar Tony send to me (thanks again!), and now I finally found the time to change the strings, to polish the frets etc. I also took a look at the P90, and I was afraid that those would some kind of no name product.

But not with Washburn, no, Sir! Those are Seymour Duncans. Since I am not a PU specialist I wonder if there are different P90s made by SD, and if so, which one are in my guitar? Probably the same Hamer build in as a stock PU in their Specials?

That's how the bridge PU looks, the neck PU got a sticker on it, saying "1 N"

Any idea?

Thanks for looking.

Those are Duncan Vintage P90's. Hamer used the Hot Neck and Custom Bridge P90's in the specials and GT's.

Seems like the general opinion here (I think, I could be wrong but I felt the same way when I had a Hamer Special) is that the Hot Neck and Custom Bridge P90s in Hamer Specials are a little too hot for the Hamers. The Duncan Vintage P90s, on the other hand, might be a better choice, and should be quite decent in the Washburn, IMO. Does anybody here have any experience with the Duncan Vintage P90s in comparison with the 'hotter' ones?

I've used a 2B and a 1N. I suspect the 1B would sound nice. If anything, not hot enough.

Bottom line, if it sounds good, it is good. :)

It is, but I dig 'em. I like a P90 to be like a humbucker with more character and those Hot 90s do that well I think.

Had the hot SD P90's on my Monaco III, changed them for Lollar's, which sound a whole lot better to my ears; the bridge position SD was wound at over 14K !!

The SD designations of 1, 2 and 3 refer to progressive degrees of "hotness", if you will. The 1's are the vintage-style winds, 2's are hot, 3's are the Custom or "stupid hot" as I like to call them. I like my P-90's rude and skronky and so tend to prefer a 2 or a 2+3 combination. The 1's are fine for a more vintage-y tone and ought to be just fine in that guitar. if it sounds good, it IS good.

At 13 and 16k, they're a little too hot and muddy for me, so I swapped them out on my Special and Duo with Lollars and Gibsons, respectively. I prefer plain old off the shelf Gibbys for old school chainsaw overdrive. Great howling cleans too. Those JBs and hot P90s must have been all the rage!
