triodecr Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 I picked up this '81 Special here several weeks back. It's a cool guitar but I'm just not bonding with it. It's in pretty nice shape for it's age with some honest play wear. There are a few chips down to the wood, some scratches and a little bit of laquer checking here and there. The fret height reduces as you go up the neck, so they may have been partially leveled at some point. The pics tell the story well. $OLD ETA: Pickups have been swapped back so cream is in the bridge position. More pics: http://s35.photobucket.com/user/gtrgui/library/1981%20Hamer%20Special
svl Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 PUPs switched neck to bridge? Or swapped out completely?
triodecr Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 PUPs switched neck to bridge? Or swapped out completely?Possibly swapped neck to bridge. It was like this when I got it. I can pull them tonight and get some shots of the base plates (I can see they are both triangle leg) and a shot of the control cavity.
svl Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 If the PUPs were swapped n to b, swap 'em back and try that baby again. Bonding most likely would occur.
matchful Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 If the PUPs were swapped n to b, swap 'em back and try that baby again. Bonding most likely would occur. Agreed. Don't give up on the girl just yet!
Guest gearwhore Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 yes bridge is the neck..was like that when I got.
triodecr Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 Pickups. The neck is marked 7.78k (actually measured 7.5k) and the bridge measures 8.26k. Cavity Case
triodecr Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 I'll gladly swap the pickups around before shipping the guitar out.
triodecr Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 Not the original PUPs obviously. Why? I thought Dimarzio used black two conductor cable and triangle legs in '81. I would assume the single conductor braid cable was around then too?
svl Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 They wouldn't register like that, would they? The bridge would be the hotter of the two.Murkat or someone much more knowledgeable than I should chime in here...
kizanski Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I thought the triangular screw posts (as shown) were the older ones?
triodecr Posted June 15, 2014 Author Posted June 15, 2014 They wouldn't register like that, would they? The bridge would be the hotter of the two. That assumes Dimarzio was winding them position-specific and I don't know if that was the case or not. What say ye, Dimarzio experts?
Guest gearwhore Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 as I understand the braided one is older...I just looked at 2 of my others and they have the black plastic shielding....my guess is a late 70s double cream. wanna trade it?
triodecr Posted June 15, 2014 Author Posted June 15, 2014 I'm not interested in any trades right now.Let me know if you are interested though.
Joe G Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I think your double creme Dimarzio with the v feet and metal braid had the leads replaced. As far as the reverse zebra neck having a higher ohmage reading than the double creme bridge, some came from Hamer that way:http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/50235-dc-resistance-bridge-pickup-76-to-80-standards/?hl=%2Bsunburst+%2Breadings#entry524352

Thanks.
triodecr Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Pickups have been swapped back and pics updated!
svl Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Since u changed the PUPs, how do you like the tonal palette now?
velorush Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 FWIW, my '80 Special came to me with the original pickups swapped, bridge for neck. I swapped them back to be aesthetically correct and realized very quickly why they'd been swapped in the first place. Sounded splendid in the 'incorrect' orientation. Less so in the 'correct' orientation.
Guest gearwhore Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 it sounded freakin great with them the other way.....I personally would have left it- which is why i did not swap them..I would be curious too how that 70s pup sounds in the bridge also
