Add volume and tone knob to newport pro

echos

Question

So I have just been reunited with my old Newport Pro. I was thinking about having a guitar tech add an additional volume and tone control to the front. Obviously that means more holes on the top and I'm okay with that. Anyway, anybody else attempted this? If so what was your experience and where did you actually place the new knobs? Or move the pup switch somewhere else? Thanks.

I'd go with stacked knobs, but that's just me. Makes volume swells harder, but that's what volume pedals are for these days... :)

^^^^^^^^^ I like this idea. Easy, non destructive mod and can be reversed without plugging holes.

I'm not sure WHERE one would add two extra pots a on a Newport? Seems it would ruin the lines of the instrument. I recall seeing one that had two vols and a master tone, though.

I have often thought of moving the switch to the bottom of the F hole, adding a volume and moving the tone to where the switch was on my Newport . Vol vol tone . I really miss blending the 2 pickups on the Newport . Has any one done this or come up with a different solution ?

Oh, does anybody know what the pot and cap values are.

Generally 500k on all pots in Hamers. Some like to use 250k on single coil pups, but i think the Hamers are 500k with the phat cats as well. I think the caps are .047uF, but you can go lower if you're not into the "woman tone" stuff. I usually go around .022uF, but have gone as low as .015uF.

Be sure to get audio/logarithmic taper pots for the volume control. Opinions vary on the tone control - i prefer linear taper, but some prefer audio there as well. I think the stock Hamers are all 500k audio taper.

If someone else has cracked open a Newport Pro, they might be able to confirm these values.

Hope that he'ps.

Roshark,

I think your on to something with just 3 knobs. The Vol vol tone might be the best solution as I think I could live without an additional tone knob. I was thinking about putting the switch where the current volume knob is, placing the neck volume where the current tone knob is, the bridge volume below the f hole and the lone tone knob to be where the switch would go.

Veatch, do you know if the pots are long or short shaft?

Stevie Damn Clay had BCR Greg do a Vol-Vol-Tone setup on his Newport Pro. In that case, the extra hole went below the f-hole. But The sample made for TKL for the Newport cases indicates that a switch in more or less the traditional Hamer spot behind the bridge is possible.

(BTW, "Swing-A-Billy" was the guitar's name while it was under development. Thankfully, it didn't stick)

Short shaft pots.

Armitage is correct - I popped the back off of the Studio, and it is .01uF. :). Not sure where I got the .047 from...
