Question

Just picked this up with a badly broken neck joint. Actually the body broke, neck joint was still solid. Glued it up nice and tight, going to wait a couple days before I string it up.

What can you guys tell me about it?

It was originally issued with a Sustainblock trem, retrofitted/aftermarket Kahler and replacement truss rod cover.

Is that one an '83? (Look at the first digit or the serial number)

Yes it's an '83. Bit of a relic. Finish is flaky, lots of little dings, some rough spots and some fret wear in the usual places.

Can't wait to plug it in. Is there any secret Juju to stringing up the Kahler? Seems way easier than a Floyd.

Welcome New Guy!

Cool guitar. Looks like it was relic'd the proper way.

Thanks.

Is there a place to do a proper intro here?

You just did! Welcome.

Love the bridge humbucker in those (should have DC resistance of around 10.5k), and that case is quite a rarity.

Got it strung, tuned and pretty well set up this morning. Plugged it in and got a lot of quiet. And a little bit of hum.

Not sure if the hum is a grounding issue or just regular 60 cycle noise but the fact that there seems to be such low output makes me think it's not grounded properly. Haven't put the voltmeter to it yet, but I will after lunch. Anyone know what I should be looking for? The wire under the Kahler seems to be in the right place and there's another ground on the aluminum backplate. Everything seems to work, it's just not very loud. (?)

What can I tell you about it? That it is a great looking guitar! Just love it when guitars show honest playwear and nothing as sexy as aged white (in guitars that is  )

I hope you can bring it back to life.

Getting there. I had to put it away because I was getting frustrated. Will try again tomorrow.

Weird thing is the voltmeter shows zero, (or maybe infinite?) resistance so I thought it would not play at all, but it does work, just very quietly.

Will take everything apart tomorrow, start from scratch.

Pretty sure it's a bad volume pot. Will extricate and test later today.

Gotta straighten out my workbench before I plug in the soldering iron.

I think it's just a dirty volume pot. Sprayed some contact cleaner in there and heard lots of snap/crackle/pop.

Sounds much better now.

With a guitar with a history like that one's, you have to expect a bit of TLC to get it back into good playing shape. I hope it's almost there for you now.
