Stained wood help

Dave Scepter

Question

Posted

I pulled my old Fender Super Champ out, & started to clean/oil her up, and I noticed a dark stain on the side that I do not know how to remove... it was stored inside an anvil amp case & had a fender cover over it, and I'm thinking that the black foam case padding must have bled through causing the stain, anyways, does anybody have any ideas "without the use of harsh chemicals/strippers or abrasives" to remove this stain?

I'm getting ready to sell her but do not want to sell her like this~

Thanks, Dave puI3cR3.jpg

Murphy's Oil Soap and a soft toothbrush? Maybe. It's fairly gentle.

Man, I love open grain wood so much....until stuff like that happens. I don't think you could have stored any safer, and still ended up with that. Dang.

Dang is right~ :(.. I absolutely love this handy little amp, It's been everywhere and have used it for just about everything from jams & practice to a pickup swap bench testing... it quite literally has thousands and thousands of hours use on it and it's a shame it gets marked up from Storage???.. well it serves me right, it's probably pissed off from being cooped up inside a box... thanks for the response, I think I'll make a trip to Home Depot & try some Murphy's Oil Soap today... :D

We'll shoot, Murphy's Oil Soap didn't work...  I'm thinking about using lemon juice from a real lemon, but I'm wondering if it'll eat through the clear coat?... Has anybody else tried this or have any other "non aggressive" recommendations?.. good news is I've decided not to sell her so I'm not in that much of a hurry...

I would guestimate that the area infected is more of a chemical burn than a stain.

something touching something that should not have been touching or a de gassing situation.

Ya know it really looks fine the way it is.  I mean it wouldn't prevent me from

buying it, and I wouldn't even try to knock you down on the price.  Just

consider it 'patina...'

Hmmmm... that could well be that piece of black foam decomposing or something?.. "it's was in the case for about a year"... I can't feel any difference in texture when I rub my hand  around it... any possible solutions?... I think I'm going to try this first... "taken from the web~O~sphere"

Instead of using toothpaste and backing soda you can use lemon juice mixed with ashes from either a cigarette or fire. Sprinkle the ashes into a little lemon juice within a bowl and mix together thoroughly. Use an old cloth to apply the solution over the burnt area, rubbing in the direction of the wood grain for a minute or two or until the heat mark eventually disappears

it was de gassing. thus, causing the "burn".

using whatever method will not work. end result is loss of original finish....

the "burn" is within, embedded within the finish.

While I was at the GCS, plenty of guitars came in for warranty for chemical , de gassing burns from guitars that were case queens.

Esp archtops that have fancy tortoise shell pickguards. When those de gassed... wrecked havoc on the guitar's finish.

Gibson had to honor the original owners warranty claims of.

Awesome Josh, & it's priced right :D... I'm gonna try this "with moderation" if the "Lemon/ Ash doesn't work...

Thanks Dave

I'm with the "don't fix what isn't really broken" contingent.  In fact, until you said you'd decided not to sell, I was going to recommend that you call it mojo and bump your price up by $50 accordingly.

Actually it's really kinda weird, since it's been out of the case for a week, I've noticed that the dark stain has almost completely faded away... ... I'll just leave it as is & keep oiling it with orange oil every so often, and hopefully it'll just slowly fade completely away...

But thanks for the tips everyone! :D
