  1. Picked up a sealed vinyl copy off fleabay. It's very refreshing to actually hold and even smell the medium. Come At me, bro(s)
  2. Collectively, my 2006 lineup probably cost me a relationship. Does that count?
  3. I thought pointy guitars were illegal in Washington state since the early 90s. Maybe that's why its for sale. That, and the sideways humbuckers. Which reminds me of a rather old racist joke.....
  4. That Dolly Parton song sounds like a cross between Stairway To Heaven and House Of The Rising Sun, IF you try to think of what other songs sound similar. The song stands on its own. Thanks! Saved me some typing.
  5. Very early 80s, my brother stepped on my Raven Les Paul copy. He and the wood shop teacher got together, removed the fretboard, and glued it on a neck they built. Thinking back now, I wonder why they didn't just go with a re-glue/splint option...would've been easier. But I appreciate the effort...even though the new neck was the size of a baseball bat. 1988, my Larrivee (about a freakin' week old) tumbled off the stand after the neck support part just kinda slipped sideways. Right back to the factory for a new neck. Never used that type of stand again....for years I just put the guitar back in the damn case when I wasn't using it. 1995, same Larrivee had the strap screw rip right out of the body, drop to the floor, and off came the headstock. Wood glue and masking tape (as a "clamp") later, it amazingly held up ever since.
  6. Take all your hoity toity curly wood and put in in a hat. Show me another one of these.....SHOW ME! Righteous, I tells ya! ....damn right handed people and your fancy parties.
  7. I'm going to duck after saying this, but as far as a pure shredder, you have to check out the old Ibanez 550 series. The original late 80s versions are rocket ships. I love my Diablo, but in terms of shredability, the 550 is a monster. I think they also have reissued them for the 20th and 25th Anniversary, but I have no idea if they match the original specs. Charvel's already been mentioned, and those old necks seemed to be built for my paws. LOVE them. The 80s Japan imports are phenomenal.
  8. 2014 Self-Denial Challenge Hell, I've been in self-denial since 1994. Do I get anything for that achievement (other than debilitating regret)? Maaaan. I wanted to try again this year. Only to fail again with weeks to go. But I'm planning on assaulting the forum's sensibilities with part mutts ugliness all year. So under section 3, The Builder's Clause, I'll be out ASAP. Btw Nathan, top reference.....top reference.
  9. Paul should have bought a set of '14 Vocal Cords to go with the '59. Meeeooow. On another note, his son is going to get a heck of a guitar.
  10. True to my character, it's in the home stretch where I usually crash and burn. And this might be the case for The Challenge. I'm keeping my trap shut for now, but I'm working on a cool score. If it pans out (which I'm pretty sure it'll happen), of course I'll post about it.... ...but for now I'm invoking the Go-Go's paradigm:
  11. Thread jogged a terrible memory.... This stinky little number stuck with me for several years. It's the only piece of gear that I'll never be nostalgic over. Parents got it for me when I was about 13 for X-Mas. Literally within a day, a family friend of a friend had a nice Carvin 2x12 tube amp combo he was willing to let go cheap...just buried the Peavey. The little mom and pop music store would not return the Peavey, even though it had literally not left the store's floor yet. This was the same music store that I was taking lessons from, and my parents had bought a couple guitars and countless strings and picks. At the time the store was the only game in town, so I guess they thought they could afford to be pricks. I was happy when they folded in the mid 90s. ...second worst was a Mesa Dual Rectifier.
  12. I see this thread goes back a long time, but I'll add my 2 cents. My secret wussy 90s music shame. It was criminal that the "industry" couldn't find room for these guys and their label dropped the band after 2 albums. Great pop tunes backed up by some talented and self-contained players.
  13. Ah, that guy...lol. Reminds me waaay back in the 90s, L&M once had a rosewood Warmoth neck hanging behind the counter for 75 bucks. And it was all rosewood. Still kicking my self for not snagging it. Guess I'm a dumb motherfucker.
  14. The Mighty VH's Mean Street covers it for me. BUT, here's a couple that gets me going. http://youtu.be/sdXjm8pZMws Sleazy goodness. http://youtu.be/4MhcYW3m9-M Gilbert makes me want to throw my guitars on the burning pile.
  15. If this wasn't overpriced by about $1300, I'd be so out of the challenge. 80s Larrivee Hurray for delusional pawn brokers!
  16. No Headpins stamp? This is a outrage! Also, if Quebec has to be represented - like a little brother that mom forces you to pick for road hockey - its got to be Mitsou. Bye Bye Mon Cowboy, indeed. http://youtu.be/8aI0QTEJjIg That's right, this happened. ....and screw stamps....Rush needs to be on all of our money. Beat it, queen (the old lady, not the band...come to think of it....Brian May on the 5'er?....coool).
  17. I grabbed a huge pair of round tits a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, they were my own.
  18. My Prince awareness timeline: Purple Rain.... Nothing for years..... Name to a squiggly line.... Nothing for years..... Giving away album with concert tix to count as sales..... Dave Chappelle skit.... Weird and funny Kevin Smith story. Solid guitar player, and fantastic pop writer, and 80s icon, but "genius" never crossed my mind. Guess I wasn't really paying attention. If a genius trashes someone's vintage guitar in a forest and I'm not paying attention, does it still make a sound like Manic Monday? Let's Go Crazy was cool.
  19. Maaaaaan, there's a Charvel 475 Deluxe being sold locally.....the only way I'm resisting it (for now) is because its got the late model toothpaste logo (Yuck!). I know its superficial, but that toothpaste squiggle is keeping me from throwing in the towel a month in to the challenge....I literally lost sleep last night laying in bed thinking if I should scoop it or not.
  20. I've been lucky enough to meet a few of my guitar heros, and while its gone pretty well, I always walked away feeling like I was a goofy a-hole. Even talking to Paul Gilbert - who's like the most down to earth dude ever - I found myself thinking, "Reel it in, idiot, you're geeking out". Talking to Paul Stanley was beyond the guitar player thing....it might as well been Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny in terms of being surreal. But I gotta go with EVH. I imagine it would look like this: Returning to the source.
  21. Sooo....do parts projects count? I've got about 4 guitars waiting to get assembled and finished with buying things like a neck here, or a pickup there....you get the point. Overall the "big purchases" will have to be 2 necks. Am I good? But as far as a straight up guitar purchase? I think I can do it. I'm in.
  22. I've gone back and forth with digital verses tube. My first real rig was a modest rack setup with ADA MP-1, Carvin power amp, and Korg A1 FX. Does a MP-1 count as all digital? I was so happy with it I didn't bother looking at another setup for about 10 years - despite getting many a snooty smirk from tubers in the mid 90s when showing up to a gig with a rack rig was apparently the same as farting on someone's dinner. Around '00 I was floored by my girlfriend who surprised me with a spanking new Dual Rectifier half stack. Away went the digital, and it was all Boogie and a couple stomp boxes for a few years, until the GF and I drove our relationship into a ditch. I couldn't stand looking at the Rectifier anymore, so I flipped it into a VHT UL (suck it, x-gf!). The VHT kicks my ass. Couple years later and I was desparate to record in my apartment. I tried every guitar software plugin know to man, as well as various POD models, and they all sucked. Some sounded great in the mix, but the actual feel of them when doing a take was terrible. Completely defeated the fun of recording. I made a decision to change things up. I unloaded my expensive and ever-devalued Roland 24 track recorder and flipped the cash into a Axe FX. It was all PC recording from now on. The difference was night and day. It was the first piece of digital gear the ever felt like a amplifier. I have no idea how Fractal does it, but I understood the hype. My VHT has rarely been touched since. Not because it isn't a spectacular amp, but mainly because the Axe FX is so damn versatile and I'm so damn lazy to switch things up. Y'know, you guys on here are kicking me in the ass. When I'm on here it's like a mirror put in front of me, pointing out how apathetic I've become about guitar, gear, and music in general. I haven't gigged in about 10 years, and its shocking to realize that. I mean, I have a big Rubbermaid bin full of rack gear I haven't looked at in 2 years, including Joe Satriani's actual Eventide Ultra Harmonizer for chistsakes! As a teenager/young adult I would have uzi'd a room full of kittens if it meant having access to what I have now...funny how that works.
  23. There's a surpising amount of KISS love here. I'm another one who started because of KISS. My standard line is that KISS made me what to play guitar, and Van Halen made me want to play guitar well. I've been to every KISS tour since 1980, so that means I seen them through some lean years. But really, I'm bummed out because this release (and it may be great) and the last release I've felt nothing but a big bucket of who gives a f@ck. It's mostly because of the two jokers pretending to be Ace and Peter. That, and the constant bad mouthing of former members by P & G. It turns me off completely. I had zero issue with other line up memebers like Eric Carr, Bruce Kulick, and even Vinnie Vincent because that least they where trying to carve out something of their own. Sometimes it worked, but mostly it didn't....however, they tried moving in different directions. It just feels all kinds of wrong to have a dude lifting another guy's licks directly. $immon$ and Stanley might own the trademark to makeup patterns, but I doubt they own a playing style patent. Bah, don't get me started! I'm gonna go listen to Alive. Love that Frehley syncopation on 100,000 Years.
