Les Paul question

Question

Sorry I know it's not a hamer question but I figured the collective wisdom here could help and a lot of folks here are knowledgeable about all makes.

What's a good value for an 81 les Paul heritage 80 standard with players wear?

It is missing the nibs due to a stainless refret and Someone routed te inside cavity shallower so they could install emg short shaft pots at one one time.  It has the shawbucker in the neck and a Duncan in the bridge.

It's a sweet player and sounds great    Te the first les Paul I've picked up in years I really liked

Thanks for any help.

with those mods, not much. Need detailed pics of what is listed.

Heritage 80's were the shizit late 80's, early nineties. the closest thing mad to the real deal back then. (had one)

(Before the H80's, Kalamazoo attempted a reissue with the KM's... hit, but mostly miss)

Then the 30th anny's came out... winner.

Then the 1st gen classics came out early nineties. winner winner chicken dinner.

Then the Historics started to show up soon after.

Used, clean Les Pauls with some pedigree will still be 2, 3k+ depending on model from 80's to present.

Your being gutted and modded, well, that's like a 4 digit with a kahler around these parts....

Oh it's not mine.  I just was curious if the asking of 2500 was a little much.  Seemed like it was to me.  iv played a bunch of classics back when they were new but none that quite spoke to me like this guitar.

Yeah $2,500 is a bit much... although some people will pay for a EMG loaded Les Paul... do you or your buddy still have access to the EMG parts?

Yup it comes with those in the case but that surprise me that that would add anything to it.  Seems like you can find 81/85 sets for 100 bux all day long.  I still rock a 81 60 set I put In my epi lp custom almost 20 years ago.

If the EMG set is cream color... it could be my old Heritage ... that I got from Andy Marshall back in the day.

If it is, the guitar is a "dud", no life to it.

Never the less, the price is high.

It's not that it adds anything to the price as much as it appeals to EMG fans that do not want to do the mods themselves... I personally do not care for EMG's however, there are a lot of hard rock/metal players that love the Les Paul/EMG combo... if it was my guitar, I would put the EMG's back in and tag it w/ "Zakk Wylde" in the auction title... and sell the passive pickups/electronics separately.. orrrrrrrrr post pictures of each and see which one sells higher... any pics?.. or you can try something cute like this...

Murkat, is a good, clean 1991 Classic  burst as good a buy as a 2013 R7 Gold Top. The GT would be a 100 bucks more. Or would it be a better deal to buy the R7?

Tough one. those early 90' Classics are going up in price ridiculously due to the lore of.

Like any other LP, there are good and bad. Get it in your hands and try. But that goes for any Les Paul really. 2013's, well, it could be good, but same rule applies. I do know that 2007 is the year for mahogany. I personally witnessed and helped unload real Honduras billets .

2007 was a magical year at the custom shop for tone woods.

In the end, LP's have always been hit miss no matter what year. The odds are better some years, worse in others.

The early 90's were great years for the USA Plant.

Ok. Thanks. Got a bad gas for an LP. Never owned one. Thought this would be the year. Got both these on the radar. What speaks for the 91 is the 60's neck profile.

Also the same guy has a 1990 Standard that he might sell.

Hard to pass up, And most of of them out there are keepers.

Is he local to you so that you can check them out?

The 2013 R7 sold. :-(   Thought I had it on hold, but the seller thought differently. Had my eyes on a 2013 R8 as well, but that was more expensive. And the seller changed his mind and is keeping it.

The 1991 is not local, unfortunately. But the seller has had it for 20 years, which might indicate that it's a good guitar. It seems he's a decent player, not a collector.

So, right now, down to the 1991 Classic, or a 2011 R8 with factory Bigsby. But that one is 11K more.
Or, a 2012 very nice looking burst R8 in good condition, the only one of the bunch that I can try out first.

Would you stay away from the 2012 R8's due to the fact it is likely to have a laminated fretboard?

there's your sign.

If you like 60's necks, GFI. An R8 neck profile is a lot bigger, thicker than a 60's profile. And that Lam board.... ugh.

If it is the same seller,... I see a pattern here that I have seen many times... Self Les Paul envy.

He found "the one" ( the classic ) , and it's a dam good one (to him).

But, there could another like it, or better.... (historic unicorns)

Called the guy. A pleasant gentleman. Had owned R7's, R8's and many other LPs over the years. Did not play much anymore. Has kept a mint 77 Gibson flying vee, a 1990 LP Standard and this 91 Classic. Says the Classic has a very loud unplugged tone. And that it's in very good condition. He kept this over the custom shop LPs as he liked it better.

So, I have it on hold. This will be interesting, indeed. Thanks for the advice Murkat!
