Kentucky Headhunter/Ted Nugent concert review

When it comes to rants from artists, I have just learned to compartimentalize them.  I decided long ago that if I only enjoyed artists that agreed with me, I'd live a pretty shallow life.

Great review!

Ted was/is one of my first guitar heroes.  I was disappointed when he started shooting his mouth off politically but he can definitely still play, and he seems to treat every show like it's his last.  And man, can he play FAST!  It's all pentatonic stuff but his speed amazes me.  Meat and potatoes rock and roll guitar at its best.

Yes, his speed impressed me early on...he was precise too. Lots of repeating figures but I still dig it.  He said several time during the show " Every gig is the most important. Every song is the most important and every guitar lick is the most important" in reference to how he approaches his music.

And he sure played like he meant every word.

In 1980 his guitar pick was thin.  Now he uses mediums.  As far as I can tell, Ted does not dig in when he plays.  A light touch might be part of why he can play the way he does.

Maybe I'll go see him.  I too can't stand his tendency to go on about politics, which actually has nothing to do with my agreeing or disagreeing with his views.  It's more a decorum thing with me. And I only say that much as to say that you did a pretty good job with that review to make me want to go check him out nonetheless.

Hell, I made it through Roger Waters, and that was one of the best shows that I've ever seen despite a few very heavy-handed moments.  I reckon I could take the good over the bad with Ted if the show is really that good.

I saw Ted several years ago opening for ZZ Top. I really dug his playing and his banter at the time while nothing I agree with did not "trigger" me in any way. The guy in front of me however was really into it, he came drunk, shirtless, and alone btw. He didn't feel that everybody behind him was making enough noise so he was constantly turning around to face the the people on the lawn with his arms up cheerleading. During one rant he made eye contact with me and posted up for a high five, I just stayed seated and shook my head to say no.

In the early days, Ted's banter was one of the things I loved about him but it was all about how great his guitars were (this guitar is guaranteed to blow the balls off a charging rhino at 50 paces), chicks, and rock and roll, with random screams for good measure (think Double Live Gonzo).  The political stuff just comes off as preachy and who knows how much of the audience has a different opinion and is turned off by it?  I'm not triggered either but it just seems unnecessary and could provoke violence in the crowd.  I can easily imagine drunk shirtless guy getting royally pissed over an unreturned high 5.

That show was early 2000's so the climate was definitely not like it is now. That guy was pretty fucking sloppy so he probably would have gone down pretty easily. :P

Saw Ted 3 or 4 times in the late '70s/early '80s, but by "Scream Dream"  lost interest. Crazy good live ('Hibernation' is one of my favorites) but I've seen some of his rants on TV. That would definitely keep me from buying a ticket. Whether I'm with him or not, that's not why I'm there.
