Prototype78 Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Hello and Happy New Year to you all My Scepter has a tip repair that turned somewhat red-pinkish over time... Does anyone (with refinishing experience) happen to know the type, brand or color code of the paint I should use to closely match the original paint of the guitar? Here are some pictures:
Dave Scepter Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 SCEPTERS RULE ALL... Sorry, please continue... 😆
crunchee Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Might be Ferrari Red, which IIRC had a pinkish tint to it with age anyway. I never cared much for that shade of red, it looked too much like a 'lipstick red' color, IMO.
Carl.B Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I would call around to a few auto body, paint stores, or printing shops to see what tools they have to correctly match what the color is now. Since the red pigment has faded over time the RGB value has changed from it's original spec's. A good auto body shop should have a good paint sensor tool to correctly read the color and give you the correct RGB information to give you. Good luck!

As mentioned the red pigment has probably faded, and the nitrocellulose lacquer has yellowed so even if there was a color code available it wouldn't be accurate. An auto body supply shop might be able to scan it but the smallest amount they'd mix is a pint, maybe 8 ounces but even that will be surprisingly expensive.
Steve Haynie Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 There is a white undercoat with pearl on top. That red was clear. At the time Scepters were made Hamer used nitrocellulose lacquer, so as Stike said the lacquer will have yellowed a little. On the Scepter I had there was a worn spot that showed all the finish coats down to bare mahogany. It seems like there was a gold color to the pearl finish, but that may just be something aging. The color you see is a combination of the colors of the layers of finish.

In other words have fun touching that up. 😄
