Yes, you should have bought it then, but hindsight is 20/20.  You should probably buy it now before the price soars some more!

Usually means he sold it on another platform (or made a side deal with the Reverb buyer) and gave Reverb the shaft.

It's been a couple of years since I sold anything on Reverb, but my understanding is, if you don't sell it on Reverb, you don't pay them any fees.
If a Reverb buyer sees a local guy selling a guitar, he could just meet the guy and buy it  - technically - outside of Reverb and tell Reverb that they sold it elsewhere (even though Reverb was responsible for the whole transaction.
