salem Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Hi. Thanks to everone's help and advice, I ordered a new guitar online. It is 25 degrees where I live, bitterly cold. My guitar should arrive tomorrow with overnight air shipping. My question is, how long should I wait to open the case once I bring the guitar in from the cold. I don't want an extreme temperature change to harm the guitar.

My guitar should arrive tomorrow with overnight air shipping. My question is, how long should I wait to open the case once I bring the guitar in from the cold. I don't want an extreme temperature change to harm the guitar.Leave it in the box for an hour or two, then remove the case from the box. Let that sit for an hour or so, then open it and slip a finger in and feel the body. If it is still cold to the touch, give it a little bit more.
salem Posted February 14, 2007 Author Posted February 14, 2007 Thanks, will do. The waiting will be tough.
MrGuitarguy Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Greg's got it right. I've seen some horrific things happen as a result of sudden temperature changes!
tomteriffic Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 This time of year, the local Martin dealer opens the tops of the shipping boxes and then lets them sit overnight before going any further with unpacking them.

acb Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 if you wait overnight before "opening" the box, you won't know if there was damage in transit and you will be SOL for an insurance claim. open the box after it arrives and do a quick look-see inspection. then close the case and let it reach room temperature overnight. imho
m chops Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I bought a guitar from Badger Dave when he lived in Mini Sota which was shipped in the dead of winter. Left in in the box for about 5 hours (shipped to the office but didn't bring it home 'til quitting time. I think I did it in 2 hour stages - opened the box top for 2 hrs, took the case out of the box for 2 hrs, then unlatched the case and left if cracked for about 2 hours. It came out fine.

LOL
HSB0531 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Awe hell, open it up Outside!LOL! Just Kidding!
Guest Meshuggah Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Salem is an amateur. He's lost, unpredictable, perhaps even sentimental. He could fool a professional. Not deliberately, but precisely because he is lost, doesn't know what to do. Unlike Poe, who has always been entirely predictable.

It must be like putting a CD in the microwave.
salem Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Hi. I'm tracking my guitar via UPS. Right now there is an "exception" to its progress: "Adverse weather conditions caused this delay." Is my guitar out in the cold during this delay? Or is it sitting inside? I'm getting worried here.
kizanski Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Is my guitar out in the cold during this delay? Or is it sitting inside? I'm getting worried here.I think you know the answer to that question. But in case you don't...No, it's not outside. It's in the truck!

kizanski Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 But isn't the truck outside?DING DING DING!And the lightbulb has lit.
salem Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Is there any danger of my new guitar being harmed under these conditions?
kizanski Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Is there any danger of my new guitar being harmed under these conditions? Please refer to Post #2 and continue down the page.Repeat.
DavidE Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I have two that might be delivered today. They'll be fine out in the cold. The danger is exposing cold finish to warm air. Depending on what time mine arrive, there's a good chance they won't get opened until tomorrow. If you want to be absolutely safe, don't open the case if the case feels cold at all.Patience is a virtue. To wait will never hurt you. (not always true, but true here)
salem Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Thanks, kizanski and DavidE I will follow the advice in this post and wait at least 3 hours to open the case. Considering that the guitar may provide a lifetime of good use, it's worth waiting 3 hours.

Considering that the guitar may provide a lifetime of good use, it's worth waiting 3 hours.Just remember, 3 hours may not be enough. If the case is cold, don't open it because there's very cold air inside.I would open the top of the box. 2 hours later I would take the case out of the box. Then I would wait until the case felt like it was at room temperature.
BCR Greg Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 3 hours may not do it.I guess you don't believe me, Salem. Your call.
