veatch Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Over the past week, i've been swapping pups in and out of the Artist Korina. I recorded a bung-load of tracks to compare the results (i was gunna try the double blind test when it was over, but at this point, i don't think i need to...) The downside is i tend to do this stuff at around 2:00 in the morning, so i couldn't run the Marshall or Germino... If you're interested in listening to how a few different P90s sound in a Korina Artist, go here: P90 Cork Sniffing I do something like this most every time i swap pups out, i've just never taken the time to put the shtuff up for other folks to listen.
atquinn Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Haven't had a chance to listen to all the clips yet, but i can say that if the Duncans weren't hum-cancelling in the middle position, they weren't the stock pickups (although they might have been the same models).-Austin
Steve Haynie Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I am having fun with your page of P90 fun. The Fralins sound good! Veatch, you are a good player, too.
Ethan Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 BIG CITY NIGHTS!!! I think the Lollar sounds quite a bit like the old gibson. This is cool, thanks for sharing!
Guest pirateflynn Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Thanks! We need more threads like this one.
veatch Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 BIG CITY NIGHTS!!! I think the Lollar sounds quite a bit like the old gibson. This is cool, thanks for sharing! "You keep me burneeen..." Lollar makes another P90 that has a weakened magnet on it which is supposed to be more like the vintage Gibson stuff. I wasn't really looking for that until i tried the Gibby, now i'm conflicted. I really liked the Fralins and the Lollars, but playing the old Gibson pup just made me smile. FWIW - that Gibby pup came out of the first guitar i owned (and still have). Got the guitar for $100 with a Fender tweed amp. I had no idea how lucky i was. I am having fun with your page of P90 fun. The Fralins sound good! Veatch, you are a good player, too. Tanx, Steve. I wish i could still play like i could back in the day, but the years have taken their toll... Haven't had a chance to listen to all the clips yet, but i can say that if the Duncans weren't hum-cancelling in the middle position, they weren't the stock pickups (although they might have been the same models). -Austin I wonder if this changed over time? I've played a couple other 2k AKs, and they were also non-RWRP. hmmmmm... (or should i say, "hummmmmmm..." ) I have no way to confirm that these are the originals, but that was my understanding. I'm at least the third owner of the guitar, so anything is possible.
Brooks Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 i put a "vintage wound" fralin in poe's P90 duotone, it sounded excellent.
Feynman Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Very nice! I seem to like the sounds of the Gibson ones in the clips. We definitely need more clips like this. I have always been curious about P90s but never had anything with them. I can just live vicariously through you.
jwhitcomb3 Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Nice job!Having an AK with Rio P90's makes me biased, but I heard some strange overtones in both the Fralins and the Lollars. Both struck me to be pushing into traditional single coil territory: the others sounded more like what I think of a P90 sound. To me, a P90 is all about the grunt and snarl. So the Fralins and Lollars just seem too gentile...like a street fighter wearing a tuxedo: classy, but wrong. Thanks a lot for that!-Jonathan
