I agree with HHB that the Fishman Rare Earth Humbucker is a very good way to go. I keep one around as a backup as my gigging guitars have built in pre-amp systems (the on board tuners are awesome for live gigs). I bought a rare earth with the built in microphone and preferred the plain humbucker version. Forget outboard micing. HUGE pita. Baggs dual source is also a good choice and won't change the acoustic sound. I didn't notice any acoustic change even with the Fishman in the sound hole.

Looks like a killer guitar at a killer price. No idea why from me. I'm dying to buy your Korina Fernandez, but I think my wife would kill me if I bought another guitar before selling some stuff at this point...

Gig canceled last night. Walked into the bar to find TWO people. TWO! We knew this week would be dead....... We told the bar owner to save his money and went home. Turns out all the area bars were dead which was a relief because Tuesdays had been good. Thursday: Mother Trucker at On The Rocks in Dublin, Ohio Friday: Mother Trucker at Woo Doggies in Hilliard, Ohio Saturday Mother Trucker Unplugged (acoustic duo) at the Hilton at Easton.

I was asked to join yet another band this weekend (that's 2 in the last week (both new upstart country bands with seasoned gigging musicians) and 3 in the last month) and I asked my wife why all of these people want me in their bands. My wife was very complimentary about my playing (which is amazing after all of these years). So, that was sweet. Honestly, there are SO many better players around here. The listening public, and apparently many working musicians, can't tell the difference between a wanking hack (me) and some others who know their shit and play some really tasty stuff. Good for me.

Does yours have a maple or spruce top?

Some nice ones in, some nice ones out. It's all good. And NONE were even close to $350.

He is now the leader of the group, and has at least 20 years of Molly Hatchet history under his belt." But he joined after they had their "hits." I saw the "new" Molly Hatchet here in Columbus a year or two ago. They did a good job on the songs and sounded very much like the original, albeit with PRS guitars and PV 5150 amps.... Two young guys on drums and bass. Some older guy on vocals that did a good job of emulating the originals. But it ain't Molly Hatchet by any stretch. None of the guys responsible for the good stuff are in the band. As for Creedence Clearwater Revisited, who the fuck cares if John ain't up front singing? He WAS CCR. Just ask him. ;-)

Poe: let me take a little issue with your post. I bought a Charvel Model 6 new back in the day. Yes, it was a killer guitar and I agree that they're very well made. I do wonder if the Jackson pickups are the same was what was in a USA soloist, but I remember them as being fine. Out of nostalgia, I recently tried a used Model 6 hanging at my local music go round and immediately remembered why I sold the guitar after several years. The neck shape. Wide and thin. Yech! The neck shape on my Cali (and moreso on the Chap Custom I had) were closer to a strat style. My point is that while the guitars you're talking about are all really good, they're not really comparible because of the neck shape. If the original poster wants to stay with that very wide and thin neck, then a Cali may not be the way to go (based on my limited experience). That being said, the neck on my Cali is quite a bit smaller than I like and I should just sell the dang thing.

That Alvarez is still my #1 acoustic gigging guitar. My Taylor 714 BCE (yes, that's freaking Brazilian rosewood back (2 piece) and sides) and Martin HD28 stay home. The Alvarez plays like buttah and sounds great plugged in. It's a jumbo with laminated maple back and sides and solid spruce top. I play this thing so much (lots of acoustic gigs this year, including many where I'm strumming hard much of the night to make up for the missing band) that I'm putting some good wear on the frets. The guitar also works great for fingerpicking James Taylor and other stuff too. Built in tuner is the shit for live acoustic gigs too.

I got to see UFO at the Palladium in NYC. I remember Off Broadway opened (and sucked huge time IMHO). I can't remember who else was on the bill though, but it was a great band. Dang....

I saw the Darkness live and they rawked. Plain and simple, they rawked. Great vocals, great guitars, great rhythm section. Some things to laugh at for sure (like the bassist's look), but they rawked. ;-) As for the new record, I haven't heard it. But how can you compete with a song called Get Your Hands Off my Woman Motherfucker?

I bought this from Tom "Terrific" Armbruster in September. Sunburst, double bound body, b-bender, drop d flippy thing, Fender bridge, locking tuners added, EMG T pickups blah blah blah. Very cool axe, but I just don't have the time or patience to get the hang of the b-bender to play in public. Works really well though! $400 plus shipping. I've had good luck with the EH 12ax7s.

From my experience, GC and Sam Ass simply do not know how to take care of their acoustic guitars and they all sound like ass unless they're new to the store. The strings are often beyond dead. I imagine most 12 string guitars sit around for a long time before they're purchased and every moron (me included) picks them up to play a Byrds tune, Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive, Over the Hills and Far Away and Wish You Were Here. The scarf joint is ugly as hell. But the added strength is the alleged reason for using it. I've owned 3 12 string acoustics in my time. 1) A 70's Guild of some sort. Very plain and basic. All black. Arched back. I think all mahogany body. I remember it being dread size rather than Jumbo. Incredible low action and really nice sound. I stupidly traded it towards...... 2) Guild JF65. The "ultimate" Guild 12 string. Bling out the wazoo. Well, not much MOP. Just awesome binding, fingerboard inlays, headstock etc... Flame Maple back and sides. Solid spruce top. Sounded great. Too difficult to play. 3) Sold the JF65 and bought a Taylor 355CE from Paults. Very plain Jane. No bling at all. Plays like buttah. Mediocre acoustic sound, but great plugged in and that's how I use it on the rare occasion it gets used. Wish I had the black Guild still.
