mudshark Posted October 3, 2025 Posted October 3, 2025 It would take a lot more than a video to make me sound like anything like the great one. Thanks for sharing. 4 Quote

Thanks for sharing. My big takeaway was the boost after the fuzz darkening the tone especially for a clean amp. My main amp is pretty clean so I want to do it. I haven't tried it yet but hopefully soon. 1 Quote

I was thinking it'd be more feasible for me to sound like Jimi than to play like him. Tomato/tomahto? 3 Quote
crunchee Posted October 3, 2025 Posted October 3, 2025 (edited) 'Borrowing licks' is one thing, but the title of your post ('sound like Jimi') made me think I'd have to get a Marshall stack (again)...and those days are far behind me, nowadays I don't want to drag around any sound gear heavier or bigger than an old-fashioned Noo Yawk phone book if I don't have to. Did you watch the video? They specifically said you don't need a Marshall. And they showed you how. I still haven't tried it but will soon. Quote
seeker Posted October 4, 2025 Posted October 4, 2025 I did watch but to be fair he covered how to sound like Jimi 1) equipment-related tones and 2) guitar playing technique. He only really did a subset of 1) so he could focus on 2) which was his main thrust. And the Much More interesting part imho. Playing at the edge of the fretboard on neck pickup blew my mind. I immediately recognized it from a lot of his songs. However, unless you use a cranked Marshall you can't do "Wild Thing" and a lot from Monterey. Screaming but glassy. Props to Otis Reading, but I wore out Jimi's side of the album. But yes, he did a full fretboard slide also, lol. 1 1 Quote

Brett Pappa had a guest on his channel maybe two years ago who went into more licks and playing. It may be the same guy. I'll have to go back and look for it. He was also putting together a course on Pappa's channel which I didn't buy. I bought into Pappa's site once for $100 because I've gained some good info from his YouTube vids and felt guilty not to give him some money. I never looked into his courses though. Just sent him a hund. Quote
