Brooks Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 ... in reality I'm a mutt of various Russian/European Jewish heritage. I constantly get comments about "those fucking Jews, Cheap Jew Bastards, Jew-you-down, etc...." at my old job, the owner said something in a sales meeting about clients trying to "jew you down". i'm half jewish, but have never experienced any racism (except from my pals who love to bust my balls). so, i wasn't offended, but i asked to speak w/ the owner and pointed out to him that its unprofessional to use any kind of racial slur. he was horrified when he put it together (my last name is kaplan, which is right up there w/ "goldberg" in common jewish names; i could see it dawn on his face when he realized it, ha.)
Tres Aardvarks Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 I had a friend drag me out of a bike shop in college when I almost went over the counter at the back-shop manager.
MCChris Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 When I worked at Guitar Center the store manager had to get between me and a customer after he claimed the case I sold him caused the neck on his guitar to warp and he called me a moron when I replied that such a thing was impossible.
Brewmaster Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Everyone thinks I'm Italian or pure bred German, when in reality I'm a mutt of various Russian/European Jewish heritage. I constantly get comments about "those fucking Jews, Cheap Jew Bastards, Jew-you-down, etc...." I just let them know they are an asshole and love it when they squirm... You and I are VERY much alike and now I know why.
Craig Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Brewie - if I get down to Florida again, we are having a beer. If you come to NY, let me know and I'll clear the calendar, we can swap stories.

Nuclear Wessel Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Never got thrown out, but when I was a poor high school and just-out-of high school kid, I can remember being asked not to play the guitars in one of the local shops. I was being careful with them. The sales guys knew I was in no financial position to buy any of the instruments, I was just window shopping. The thing is, the pesky kids that hang around the store wanting to try out all the guitars eventually get decent jobs and may end up being your best regular customers.Funny too how once you actually buy a guitar with your own money, after that, every time you walk in the store, the sales guys will say "Howzit goin' Rob? If you see anything you like, feel free to pull it down and plug it in!"
Jimbilly Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 I used to work with a woman who used the phrase "chewed them down" in regard to negotiations. Apparently that's the way she heard it, and it makes sense in an innocent sort of way. I did tell her that it was really a twist on a bigoted statement, I laughed pretty hard when I first heard her say that, "gnaw-gnaw-gnaw". Oh, and I've never been booted out of a music store. My favorite local shop kicks people out all the time, they get so sick of people who are just waiting for the bus and feel like playing and scratching up guitars.
kurtsstuff Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I threw some "doods" out of my store one time...I was at the sales desk and 4 guys walk in and one commences to sit himslef behind a drum set...one grabs a bass, one grabs a guitar and I guess the other was the singer...anyways..I stopped them before the "jam" session could begin. I could'nt believe what they were doing! Of course one of them just had to come back 3 days later and tell me that they bought some gear from the store across town....Well....that store across town was the "sattelite" store and no...not one piece of gear was purchased...lol!
Nuclear Wessel Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I walked in to a shop once where some guys had started an in store jam. The sales guys broke that one up to after a while.
Guest cruster Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Sheet, I was in the local Guitarget shortly after it opened. One of the drum room guys was on a throne doing a decent job, there was another salesman in the front wanking on a bass, and a third playing guitar. It wasn't big label quality, but I was impressed they had actual musicians working there. I talked to the drum guy (although I don't play drums) and the guitar guy for a while after they got done screwing around. Thing is, I've been in there half a dozen times since then and those three are never around. Too bad, as I think that would have done more to actually sell goods than letting the high school wankers come in on Saturdays and do the 'meedly meedly meedly' scale thing. Heck, even the local mom and pop lets the salesdroids play the goods...and they all seem to be able to play a variety of styles.
