JohnnyB Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 G&L makes some Killah stuff. The best "Tele" I've ever played was a G&L. The '62 Esquire I used to own was a close second, believe it or not. SKEEEEEERYY!! There's a saying among the G&L enthusiasts: "You can never have too many ASATs," as this picture attests: Note: Picture taken from Greg Gagliano's website. Greg is/was an editor at 20th Century Guitar. G&L makes 14 different models of the ASAT, and you can quadruple the number of permutations (56) off the standard price list by choosing between alder and ash for the bodies and maple or rosewood for the fretboards. For a modest upcharge you can also get an ebony fretboard or a figured maple top. Here's one for Serial:
cmatthes Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 You're really hurting me here, you know that don't you?!!?!
elduave Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 We *just* ordered one of those for a customer, except with a mirror pickguard and black covers.
tomteriffic Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 +1 for G & LI did a body count and lo and behold, my number 2 brand around here is Yamaha. I have 4 Pacificas, two of which I bought sight-unseen. Three are various Tele-types and one is a Strat 12 kind of thing. After the first two, I figured out that, for an inexpensive, fun, easily replaceable guitar, you'd have to work pretty hard to beat a Pacifica and some GFS pickups. They easily top my "toy guitar" pile.

SKEEEEEERYY!!+1 - Your statement says it all, and is great advice - after considering tele-style guitars for years, I made the move Monday & bought one that I had been obsessing over since December, an Asat Classic Semi-hollow in tobacco sunburst over swamp ash. OK, so it is a Tribute model that only cost me $525, but it compares very favorably to a USA made ASAT that I tried last year while waiting for my Hamer to arrive, that was priced at $1250. The tobacco sunburst on swamp ash is very similar to Hamer's jazzburst finish, the most beautiful tele style guitar I have ever seen, feels & plays like a $1500 guitar, & the G & L pickups & electronics really enable you to get the Tele sound. Appreciate the advice & want to encourage all members looking for the perfect tele to check out G & L.
