Dumo Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I like my Soldano Atomic 16 for that. Sounds great through a ext. cab.
Punkavenger Posted October 24, 2006 Author Posted October 24, 2006 I was hoping to get something good for around a grand ... I was looking at a Orange rocker 30 (probaly too loud) and a Buddha 18 twinmasterAlso that Germino clubmaster 40 (probaly too loud AND too expensive)AND that Marshall 18 watt reissueHowever I don't think any of those are quite right, That why I thought I would ask Kurt his opinionI need a good clean and a really good gain channelCan be used ... a few nicks and scratches ok, just not f'ed upIn all honesty I probaly won't have the $$$ until spring when work picks up againAlso .... I have no problem putting my money where my mouth is, If Kurt or someone else goes to any sort of trouble to find me something ... then you've got the sale
Guest pirateflynn Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 AND that Marshall 18 watt reissueThe Roccaforte Custom 18 in the emporium is lookin' pretty sweet! Check it out.
Scottcrud Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Gorilla 30 awesome amp man, or one of those Pignose tube amps designed by Daennis Kager of Ampeg/Sundown fame. And yes, I was kiddong about the Gorilla 30...that was my first amp btw.
kurtsstuff Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 I'm really no expert and tone is so subjective. And what I consider a good tone either clean or dirty may not be what you like at all? but a couple of things that might work for you and I'm staying in the run of the mill, can be had any day of the week for a grand or so are the Boogie MarkIII's or F50's (more metal capable) and possibly a Fender twin with a good distortion pedal? There are a ton of good amps out there as well as a ton of bad ones that sound good but are built with "unobtainium" and hell for service and such. Let your ears be your guide. When you find an amp that makes you watch the clock at work cuz you can't wait to get home and play it then....you've found "your" amp...
Hamer95USA Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Hey punkavenger, Get one of these: Find a used Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (USA or Mexico) between $300-$400 and have it sent to Jim Price of Omega Amps for Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville mod. The mod will cost you $250 plus shipping both ways. You'll get back an amp with blackface cleans in the clean channel and early '70s Marshall tone in the drive/more drive channel. I also swapped out the stock Eminence Legend 125 speaker and installed an Eminence Cannabis Rex. Much better sounding with good lows & mids with smooth high end. Great amp for under $1,000. Portable, not too loud (40 watts of tube power), great for jam nights, dorms, garages, rehearsals and gigs. Guitar George
Gabe Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Because you really need a low watt amp not to get into a fight with your roommates I'd recomend a Carr Mercury. These are expensive though.Gabe
Dumo Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 How about a Rivera Suprema 55 or a Mesa F50 with a volume pedal in the loop for attenuation?
mattb Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Peavey Classic 30, Rivera Pubster, MESA Subway Rocket....
Craig S Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Peavey Classic 20 would be good if you could find one
sirDaniel Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Tech 21 Trademark 60 still hold it's own well for $300 and under.Real tubes?options are endless...
Punkavenger Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 wowThanks you guys!just about every suggestion sounded goodI researched (on the net) every amp mentionedThat Soldano atomic 16 sounds >>> yummyDoes anyone know how hard they are to find and what $$$ ? also growing up with friends in bands the mesa boogie was always considered the shit always wanted to try one ...And that blues jr mod also sounds perfect Hmmm I guess I should get off my ass and go make some money!
Dumo Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Trust me. The Soldano Atomic 16 or Astroverb (same amp with reverb which you won't use) kills. Think hotrodded JCM 800 with an awesome preamp volume knob. It sounds great at low volumes. The price on these has gone up. They can be found for around $600 used. Built like a tank too. Military strength transformers and such. Word.
specialized2 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 hey check out Mesa boogie's old dc series. They made em in 50 and 100 watts, the cd-5 combo can be had for cheap, even the half stack version is under a grand... look for the Black Shadow speakers as they are the cat's ass. mine is loud at 50 watts, but the three channels are all usable, especially with the equalizer. Blackface soundin cleans, you can really get the pull pot for the dirty channel into Marshall territory, and of course this is what predated the rectifier circuit in the lead channel. Scooping the mids with the EQ is cool, Mesas have a different way of adjustment completely. I don't think they're inherently harder to dial in, but the take longer, and make you take a different approach. Here's mine:http://photos-309.ak.facebook.com/ip004/v3...994309_8541.jpg
jettster Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Just my experience but, when I played through a Soldano Atomic 16 and Astroverb. I had to crank them both a lot louder than my Orange rocker 30, to get a tone I liked. The Orange is way more versatile too. You can't always reliably go by wattage and figure you will be able to get a good low volume tone. For example my Orange is 30 watts and my Budda 18. I have to crank the Budda a little louder than the Orange to start getting into good tone territory. For low volume bedroom tones you will be pushing the envelope with most tube amps, at any wattage. It seems that most of them regardless of wattage, need to be pushing some air to start sounding full. At that point, you may be well beyond what most people consider a low volume solution. I've had the same issues with using a hotplate.I’d be more concerned about how the master volume works than the actual wattage. I think solid state type amps may have the edge for low volume playing but, then you miss that tube tone. Always a compromise somewhere. Trust your ears as the best solution.
Punkavenger Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 I liked the Orange rocker 30 best out of all the amps I've tested so farBut my local music store has a very limited selection of low wattage ampsMostly they have either 100 watt Marshall stacks or cheap SS practice amps
