riffpowers Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 I've got a les paul custom that could do with some new p90's.As you all know, the custom is a harder sounding guitar than the standard, so the KA p90's I have in it at the mo sound a bit thin and harsh.I could do with a fatter warmer set, more leslie west than angus young sounding. The 4 usual suspects are...Gibson p94Rio Grande BastardSD Phat catsBareknuckle mississipi queen.Anyone tried any of these??I'm looking for the warmest, fattest, dirtiest p90 sound to thicken up a thin and hard sounding guitar. What my best be pickup wise??
tgoss Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Dimarzio makes the DLX model which sounds pretty good. There's also EMG's if you want to go active.
El_Natoro Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Try the GFS Mean 90's, then tell me how you lke 'em :angry:Seriously, have you considered those?http://store.guitarfetish.com/humbuckers.html
tomteriffic Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I've got a set of Pete Biltoft jobbies in an import SATF. Those have a thing all their own going, definitely different from your basic medium-to-hot P-90. Very wide-open sounding, not as much midrange honk as you might expect.
Brooks Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 i don't have much experience w/ most P90's, but i will say that phatcats in a spruce duotone is the tone for me.

Phat Cats don't have the midrange and are too twangy for that sound. The Mean 90's are an option but I would call the mfgr and ask him what they sound like, as I said in the other thread his description doesn't say much. What is the Bareknuckle Mississippi Queen?? That sounds like a Leslie West pickup if there ever was one.
Craig S Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I have a set of Kent Armstrong WP900s(I think that's the model)w/reverse wound neck and slightly overwound. I had them in my SG Standard and comparded them to my LP Special with regular Fralin P-90's...pretty close considering the other variables such as body weight, pickup location and such. I've had Rios and Phat Cats also. IMO the Phat Cats are something different than the pup's mentioned so far due to the Alnico II magnets.
hairyandy Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I have a GFS Dream 90 in a single-pickup LP Custom and it kicks ass! I figured that it would suck for $30 but it really sounds pretty good. If you hate it, you're only out $30 so how can you lose...Andy
PAF Man Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I've had a Phat Cat in the neck of a thick maple-capped LP copy and the Fralin P-92 in the neck of a semihollow Tele -- pretty different guitars. But it's true that the Phat Cat had more sparkle than the (slightly overwound) P-92 but less width and airiness. I prefer the P-92. But I tell ya, the combination of that Phat Cat and the Gibson Burstbucker Pro in the bridge of that LP was the best combo tone i;ve had.ofcourse i traded the guitar away. doh!
