Studioplayer Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I'm new to this forum and just bought a new Hamer Studio Custom (Aztec Gold). I was wondering if any Studio Custom owners reside here and can help me with setup of my new guitar. I have experience in setting up Les Pauls in the past. Are there any owners of the Studio that can relate to me their pickup height, bridge, neck relief settings. Does Hamer have any known factory settings for all of these?I'm happy to be a new member here and looking forward to endless hours of enjoying my Studio CustomStudioplayer
Sentinel Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Goto www.hamerguitars.com and download the owners manual (it's a pdf-file) if you haven't got it in your hardcase already! Read it, it's good!A tip - set the tone control to 5 and the volumes just about the same and start from there. Try it and you'll see what I mean (the pots are THAT sensitive).Welcome, by the way! It's nice in here!! :-)

It's nice in here!! :-)Thanks for the reply. I like the controls on the guitar. I will try your settings. I started with the tone on about 5 and the volumes between 7 and 8. I did receive the m and the bridge pup just slightly above the ring. There was a manual with the case and have read it. I'm interested in just what would be the best pickup height to start with. When I took it out of the case for its' first playing I noted the neck pup was below the ring. I don't know if that is where Hamer sets it or if the vendor set it up.Do you have yours set this way? Do you balance both pups for volume? Or, is the bridge pup set louder than the neck? I also noted two strings in contact with the back of the bridge, which might interfer with sustain from the low and high E strings. Studioplayer
Sentinel Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 When I took it out of the case for its' first playing I noted the neck pup was below the ring. I don't know if that is where Hamer sets it or if the vendor set it up. I would guess the best starting point is slightly above the ring. That's the way I have my (3) Hamer's. Actually I don't have a Studio (yet!) but what I'm telling you are some decent guidelines that will work at a start. The rest, of course, is a matter of taste! (Please, chime in - ye other guru's here - I'm a Hamer newbie of sorts...) Do you balance both pups for volume? Or, is the bridge pup set louder than the neck? It all depends on the style of music I'm playing at any given time... My tip was only a starting point - instead of the frequently used "full throttle" on all - setting... which perhaps would work on lesser guitars...?!? I also noted two strings in contact with the back of the bridge, which might interfer with sustain from the low and high E strings. Yes, I've heard that too... I had that on my Monaco Elite, so I simply raised the back "beam" a little... it doesn't need to be screwed down all the way. Now it sustains like forever! So, in short... use common sense and go from there... you will love your Hamer!
silentman Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 All the stuff your asking aboot is pretty much personal preference. I like to have very little relief in the neck and the action fairly low.
Travis Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I like a little bow in the neck and high action set up with 11's. But that's just my personal preference. As far as pickup height, I tinker around with that stuff constantly so there is no one correct height for all my guitars.BTW, welcome and post some pics of that new Studio.
Studioplayer Posted January 11, 2007 Author Posted January 11, 2007 Sentinel,I took your advice re: tone control on 5 and volumes at about 5. I agree that those Hamer controls seem more sensitive. I like the way they respond starting at your recommended settings. By the way, I'm breaking this Studio Custom in with a new Roland Micro Cube. It is a very good practice/home amp with amp models for Fender, Mesa, Marshall, and Vox amps. I will try it through my larger Fender amp once I get a place toset that up now that I'm using a different practice room.I like some bow in the neck around .010 or the thickness of a .010 guage E string (which is the amount of relief specified in Hamer's manual that came with the guitar). I made a set of feeler gauges using various string sizes that come in very handy when setting relief in a neck. I use 010 gauge D'Addario XL110 on my electrics. I will adjust the tailpiece to lift the high and low E strings off of the back of the bridge. Studioplayer
Sentinel Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Nice to hear that you're getting along with your Studio... You'll find more Studio owners here - just wondering where they are right now! BTW, welcome and post some pics of that new Studio. I agree, show us your curvy beauty!
Jimbilly Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I just set mine up the same as the other guitars, and it seems to work out ok! I think it's time for some SC porn!! -mine happens to be a '94.
atquinn Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Nice to hear that you're getting along with your Studio... You'll find more Studio owners here - just wondering where they are right now! I resemble that remark! I just haven't posted because I don't want to inflict my clueless set-up tips on anyone else -Austin
Kurt L Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Here's mine. It's a '96, only had it a few weeks but I'm really enjoying it.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/kurtl/HamerSC2.jpg
Abaco Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Excellent! I have 2 Studio Customs. They are excellent guitars. I play 9's and use them for 80's rock and some blues. There is a great book I have that explains settups pretty well... http://www.amazon.com/Make-Your-Electric-G...TF8&s=books I like mine with low action (just above fretting out up high), and straight necks (just enough to not buzz down low). I don't adhere to the theory that you gotta screw the stop down to the body for sustain. They sound and play better with the stop raised so that none of the strings are bent over the back of the bridge - in my opinion. These are great, great guitars. You made an excellent choice!
Studioplayer Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 I asked the folks at Hamer about pickup height setting. The email they sent to me indicated that the factory setting is 1/32" between string and pickup cover when the strings are fingered at the last fret. They also informed me that the Duncan '59 pickups on my new Studio Custom are stock Duncan models, and not specially made for Hamer.I hope this info might be of help to other owners of this wonderful guitar.Studioplayer
