JohnnyM Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Hi,I am ordering a newport (phat cats and bigsby) today and can't decide between a natural spruce top or a jazzburst spruce top with natural back and neck?Guess, it's just o color, can't wait to get the guitar, I have been savingmy pennies for a while now.
tone_loco Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I like the vintage spruce. But I also like the jazzburst. Either way, congrats! BTW, who are you ordering it through?
hardheartedbill Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 natural! IMO there is too sharp a change between the colors on a jazzburst , it needs more blending for my taste
Buzzy Fretts Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Here's a little jazzburst pron fer ya. I'm a big fan of natural too....
jwhitcomb3 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Both are nice. I'd go with tortoise shell binding on a natural.-Jonathan
edgar_allan_poe Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Either way you go....spend the extra dough and get the F-holes bound. It looks *fantastic*.
GusS Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 jazzburst spruce top with natural back and neck? that will be ugly as hell.the burst on the back of the body & neck of the stock jazzburst finish is so hot right nowid go au naturel ou tout jazz
HamerHokie Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I would get an opaque color with polka dots. Seriously, finish options are kind of lacking with the spruce topped models, because the spurce grain isn't as attractive as maple or even mahogany. My favorite Newport finish is opaque black, which you can't get any more. I saw a blue one but it looked very purple. I rather like the stock orange finish. Jazzburst has never appealed to me.I wonder how 'vintage natural' would look on spruce.
silentman Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 tobacco sunburst is another option that wouldn't look bad
HamerHokie Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Trans red looks fantastic over spruce. Yeah but the Phat Cat models are limited to chrome PU rings, so I'm not sure how that would look. Trans red looks best when offset by black hardware IMHO.
Buzzy Fretts Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I wouldn't limit my finish choice by what p/u rings are available. Its too easy to swap out the rings and have what you like. Black rings set in a natural finish looks great. Laura Press had a great Duo built that featured natural finish with dark accents- I think she went with either black or tortise binding.
hardheartedbill Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 on a Newport you are limited to chrome rings
belgian Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Newport Tobacco sunburst with bound F-holes : Yummie.Someone over here has one, if I remember...
Buzzy Fretts Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 on a Newport you are limited to chrome rings Till ya swap em out....
straightblues Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Basically, you can't go wrong with either color.I have a natural. I wanted a Jazz Burst but ended up getting a great deal on a used Natural. The natural finish is growing on me. It is getting darker with age. It is such a great guitar, I could never imagine me without it now. Also, I like the unbound F holes and the vintage off white binding.Even though the spruce top might not have the fanciest grain to it, it sounds way better than the maple to me. So don't be tempted by the looks of those fancy maple top that are offered on the Newports. IMHO, the Phat Cats sound wayyyy better than the humbuckers in this guitar so stick with them.
