Dr Z Rt. 66 Blond Head and Z Airbrake

Hey Folks,

FS: Dr Z Rt. 66 Blond Head and Z Airbrake. These guys are off to Evil Bay tomorrow and I thought I'd run this by the board in case someone had an eye out. I need to pony up for a fine '69 tele that has come my way and need to thin the stack. The 66 head is in very good condition with a single cosmetic issue - four small dark circles are visible on the tolex where my Tube Tape echo sat atop it for a few months. Comes with a 2nd pair of Chinese milk bottle tubes. Here's the link at Dr Z's site. The spin on this amp is how the two tone controls work as expected until 12 o'clock and then begin to act as band-specific gain. This allows you to dial in a tight bottom under overdriven highs or add a crunchy bottom end to clean treble. Here it is the 66 sitting atop the blond stack.

The Airbrake is an attenuator that allows you dial in a hot tone at bedroom volume. Here's a thread that has some good points, pro and con, on these.

$1000 for HFCers, plus shipping, for the 66.

$225 for HFCers, includes shipping, for the Airbrake.

Brake fluid should remove the marks.

Buzzy is a fine gent, folks. Buy with mucho confidence.

Airbrake was BINed.

But I decided to wait till I had a minute to clean up the rubber feet impressions on the tolex of the 66. I'll let it go in here for 899 +shipping, as is. or off to the bay it is...

Goddamn that's a good price for that amp. And I have a blonde Z Best cab that I'm sure would sound tits with it. Curse you, temptation.

Seriously, one of the best ROCK tones I've ever heard live is a Les Paul into a Route 66 head on top of a Marshall 4x10 cab. The guitarist for Houston based Stillife uses this setup. His name is Frank DeBretti , he's a great player and his tone is massive!

I don't think anyone can find a better head at a better price than this one! I wish I could afford it now myself. Heck, I was just on the phone begging a guitar player friend of mine to buy, knowing I'd get to use it sometime. He's short of funds... too bad.

Hi Buzzy Fretts, that amp is a great deal. I own a Ghia and Maz 18 Jr NR. Love em. Good luck on the sale. I don't understand BINed. Is it still available?

I just checked his MySpace page; seems he's (or was) a Hamer endorser too. Very cool!

Buzzy .... PM sent. :)

That is a great price for that amp. Take it over the the Dr. Z forum on the Dr. Z amps site. You will sell immediately at that price. No need to go to Ebay. http://drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/

If I had not bought two high dollar amps in the past 3 weeks you can bet it would be coming to my house. That is one of my favorite amps and I will own one some day. I have a Carmen Ghia 1 x 12 in blond that I might trade you for it if you are interested.

Also, the black Newport looks very nice.

hamerrocks, BINed means Buy It Now thru e-bay.

hey pheonix! good to see you. yeah I'm still at AMNH. let me know the next time you're passing through. I'm in and out the summer so send a flare ahead of time.

hmmm. I haven't heard any follow ups so the 66 is still available.

basicly if anyone's on the fence, the window of time that I'm willing to let it go on the cheap will close when I get in my car for work tomorrow. after that the cash flow issue will be moot and I'll probably sit on it till I get some time to follow up at full price in a couple weeks.

I was out of town much of the summer so I stopped trying. someone from the board will be stopping by work tonight and taking it home. if that deal unravels I'll send up one more flare before pushing it onto the 'bay.

After all these years I finally got to hear a Dr. Z amp in use (other than Brad Paisley on CD and TV). It might have been a Maz of some sort. Sounded killer boutiquey. I must have me one of these Z's one of these days.

Navagator just walked out of the museum with a sweet blond under his arm. Bill, I look forward to hearing how she works out.

yeah david. my favorite of the family was when I heard cbeeper playing his MAZ Sr. He's a pedal junkie and these amps really like when you hit them with overdrive. The 66 has a unique tonestack - a treble and a bass control that work as clean gain until 12:00 and above 12 work as overdrive. My favorite setting had the bottom all tight and solid the top end with some hair on its chest.

Thanks again Frank. She's a beauty for sure. I just got my second session in with the amp last night, and it was almost radically different from the first time playing it. I was getting just a great rock tone with it at quite low volumes (with a Fulltone OCD, through a Bogner cube with a G12H30). I found the amp very dark when I first played it, but I ended up turning the treble up to about 4 o'clock and it crunched up beautifully without sounding harsh at all. I almost could not stop playing for several hours! So far so good!
