Scooter Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I recently picked this up for a good price, but will need to flip it to help pay for the new Carvin Singlecut I ordered. It's in really good shape with a few exceptions: There is a ding by the input jack, a tiny finish crack by the neck pocket and another one by the Floyd post. Also, the fretboard is worn - not the frets - the fretboard! By the "cowboy chord" area. Is doesn't appear to have been refretted, so I can only assume the previous owner used light gauge strings and really "dug in" when chording. Ever see this before? The original case still has the Floyd papers and the warranty card. It says it's loaded with Seymour Duncans, but I don't know which models. According to vintagekramer.com, it's a late 1985 model - that last to be made in the USA before shipping production to ESP Japan. Check out the link below for a buch of large photos: Photobucket Kramer Album I assume I'll have to put this on eBay. But I like to put things here first. Anyone have an idea of value?
Scooter Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 Nevermind, I just put it on eBay. We'll see what happens. Hopefully I can turn a nice profit. Auction Thanks to Kurt for helping determine a general value.
FrankieII Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Something about the neck having a skunk stripe, and the location of the scarf joint on the back of the headstock are both very unusual. I've seen many, many of these over the years and they have never had a skunk stripe, and the scarf joint was done similar to a Jackson.
Kramer_nut Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Nice guitar, I have one similar to it although mine is an '86. 1986 Kramer Pacer Those scarf joint necks are fairly rare I have a pointy version which is harder to find. You are correct that it's loaded with Duncans. JB in bridge. Good luck, you should keep it!! It will be worth twice what the Carvin is in another 20 years!! (Just my opinion)Todd

I don't want to mislead anyone. In my defense, I know the Carvin will never be a "collectible" guitar, but it's loaded with the features I just couldn't find anywhere else. 25" scale singlecut with a Floyd? I couldn't pass it up.
formula73 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Nice! If I wasn't working on an Iceman...
Kramer_nut Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Looks great, mine isn't as White as yours. Mine is more of a creamy yellowish white. Kinda like when white ages. Looks like a pretty clean guitar. I'd say it's a decent buy. Can't guarantee you'll get what your starting bid is, these are going for anywhere between $400-550. Good luck, wish I had the cash I'd pick it up from you.Todd
peedenmark7 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'd be interested in seeing the necks scarf joint....I worked for a kramer dealer back in '85 and the first batch of the hockey stick or jackson style headstock all had glue/assy problems...some we were able to simply shave the first 2 frets on... most received entirely new necks...not that this is the case here, just curious....

Kramer_nut Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I'd be interested in seeing the necks scarf joint....Wow that one looks clean, I'll have to take a picture of mine and we can compare. Todd
peedenmark7 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I dont see a joint , unless its above the floyd mounting holes and the headstock only is joined... if that be the case this is a later neck the defective joint I made mention of was around the 3-4 fret area. the glue would let loose in the heat of shipping and the joint would slip causing the headstock to tip further back , thus the first 2-3 frets hitting the strings at normal bridge height.
Scooter Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 You are correct, the joint is not under the fretboard, it's right next to the low E tuner. Does this mean the neck is or is not proper for this guitar? I'd like to disclose this to any potential buyers.
peedenmark7 Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 its neither... its just a production change brought on by a poorly designed scarf joint , coupled with bad glue. I stopped doing the kramer thing [having gone jackson] about the time these guitars came out so I honestly dont know serial number wise when this change occurred . I can say though that I spent a good deal of time during the summer of '85 doing warranty repair work on pacers, redressing frets or replacing necks... at one point we got a box of around 30 necks in , to correct store stock and had to return the defective ones. I dont recall those necks having a scarf joint at all... so I would guess your guitar to possibly be a late '85 pacer >>after the neck problem was corrected. maybe kramer decided they were going through too much wood making necks without the scarf joint and then reintroduced it ,placed above the nut. mere speculation on the last statement I like the early pacers myself... strathead or beak they were pretty good guitars for the money... I wish I had kept my trans red ash strathead with rockinger... but the rockinger didnt work and I spent more time unclamping those 6 dumbassed locknut screws tuning than I ever played it.... would be a nice conversation piece today though theres a rockinger pacer on ebay right now... but missing parts and I never liked that particular sunburst. also had several cream with orange racing stripes strathead with vintage trem pacers.... one was so nice still cant believe I let it go.... I do know of an early pacer carrera with a black rockinger, that i would love to have... it was one of the first pacers shipped to wisconsin... she's no prize cosmetically , but the gentlemen that owns it wont part with it anyway
Scooter Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 its neither... its just a production change brought on by a poorly designedscarf joint , coupled with bad glue.According to the info on vintagekramer.com, the serial number would date this as a late 1985 model. Knowing that, and the info you just gave me, I'm fairly secure in saying this is the original neck. Does that sound about right?
Zoner Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Funny the mention of classic Pacers and Rockingers. I'm putting mine up for adoption as we speak - '83 "The Pacer" with aformentioned Rockinger trem. Lots of brass on this and I have to give Kramer props as this is a pretty cool ride. I just have never bonded with the trem system and have too many strats. Old Kramers are cool, especially the Elliot Easton model and the Nightswans. Z
Kramer_nut Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Nice Pacer!!! Both of these come up when I have no money!!! If I hadn't bought that Hamer Studio last month.......Nah I like it too much!!!Good luck.Todd

peedenmark7 Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 not to mess with this thread but PM sent on the rockinger piece :0
DEMENTED Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I sold an '83-4 Pacer Deluxe last year for $350ish if that helps.
