DEMENTED Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I am doing a run of 6 in African mahogany (sapele), dovetailed joints and oil finish. These are the dual ported Dumble style units. 22 3/4" x 16" x 13 1/4". Just let me know....for the corksniffer in you Pricing yet TBD, prolly in the $425-500 range unloaded. Here is a pic from the previous run. And here is an in progress shot of the current batch being dry fit.
gwayne Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I'd be very interested in you doing a hardwood head shell for my Mesa Mark-IIB. Shoot me an e-mail at gwsmith@southernco.com with details.
Steve Haynie Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Do you ever do plywood and tolex cabinets?
DEMENTED Posted January 5, 2008 Author Posted January 5, 2008 Do you ever do plywood and tolex cabinets?Ummm....no. I started doing this to cater to people looking for something a little more upscale...for their studio or living room and such. I had alot of request for plywood and tolex....so I reluctantly did a run of six. I don't do tolex so I had to sub that out. I sold all of them quickly but didn't make money on them. As a one man show doing this in my spare time I can't compete with any of the other cab builders out there that do this in a production enviroment. They can do it way faster and cheaper. So, sorry no plywood and tolex. I want to do small runs and custom work only. If you really want this design in tolex you can contact my friend, Alf Hermida at Hermida Audio Technology. He sells empty tolex cabs for $275. They are basically the same design because he bought one of my hardwood cabs and did them in tolex. Check them out!http://www.hermidaaudio.com/
geoff_hartwell Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 This stuff looks great! What, would you say, are the tonal differences between the open back and the ported? And I assume the ported is much more directional, or I should say focused forward? I almost always use open back amps, just out of convenience I guess. But I'd be interested to know how these differ in performance. Geoff
ZR Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Is all African mahogany also sapele? Is all Sapele African mahogany?

The hard part is describing these cabs sound...it's a much bigger sound than I was ever used to hearing from a 1x12. These are also 13" deep with ribs on the interior of the rear panel that break up standing sound waves and all this works together for a big sound. I don't usually like the sound of open back combos and my last was a SF Fender Vibrolux Reverb that I ran into one of my 1x12 and it was an amazing improvement.
ZR Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 What do you know about the Sapele wood vs. other mahogany?
DEMENTED Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 What do you know about the Sapele wood vs. other mahogany?Sapele looks more like "real" mahogany, not that Philipino mahogany that is so common today. It seems similar to the good mahogany that furniture was made of. It's as good a tonewood as any.

So, does that mean that it's Sapele? Thanks for the help! Nice cabs. Have you ever seen Airtight Garage cabs. They have a nice wood look to them as well. I think he uses Cypress and some other stuff. Forget his name but he's a nice guy.
