ceeb Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 A friend of mine started playing guitar a few months ago and has decided to stick with it, so he decided he wants a Les Paul. He's got about a grand to spend as soon as his tax refund comes in. I don't know a hell of a lot about LPs, but I do know he wants to buy a used one, and it has to be a Gibson. What models should I be looking at in that price range? He wants either a burst, a gold top or black, so that narrows it down a bit.
Jorge Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 He wants either a burst, a gold top or black, so that narrows it down a bit. With those restrictions, he is not going to find one of the more expensive models, unless it is in very poor condition (not advised). He will find plenty of black Studios, which are the same than the Standard, just more simple looking. If he is willing to go natural in color, I would recommend a Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Studio. Great quality over price. If he is willing to buy a Gibson decal and put it on top of the headstock, I would strongly recommend a Japanese made Edwards Les Paul. Amazing quality, better than most Gibsons, and nobody in the audience would not know it is not a Gibson. (Hedyted four zpellynn.)
serial Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 A grand will get Studios and maybe a repaired Standard or Deluxe. Needs to pony up a few hundred more to get into the traditional LPs.

Spend a couple bucks more and get a Standard!!! They are "Standard" for good reason and if he doesn't stick with it he's gonna get some money back. I've got an ebony early nineties Standard which I got new then and I'm still happy with it.
JohnnyThunders Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I've had a few LP's including 76 standard, early 90's custom and a 2005 Standard. I sold them all and kept this Japnese copy from that wackly San Fran guitar shop Subway Guitars. It's called a Fatdog. It has tarnished gold hardware but is in excellent shape otherwise. Has replaced silver humbuckers which are Gibson from what I was told. Has a slim taper neck, plays and sounds excellent but I don't play it much. Why, becuase I always knock the pickup selector switch when I'm playing. If anyone is interested $600 shipped/paypal
straightblues Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I bought a standard with a previous headstock break for $850. You can find Standards out there for $1,000 if you are patient.
BCR Greg Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 1998 Gibson Les Paul Smartwood Banara over flamey mahogany, gold hardware very good, original Brown hardcase $829.00
Halowords Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 I'd HIGHLY recommend a Heritage H-150. It is made by the old Gibson employees in the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, MI, and looks, sounds, and plays just like a Les Paul. Oh yeah, and they're hand made! I just picked one up and love it. I love Hamer's neck design better than Gibson's (no neck heel to speak of), but this H-150 is as good as the Gibson LP Standard I (foolishly) got rid of when I started Grad School. A used, even just-barely used, Heritage is a steal. If I was in the market for a LP (and I was), I'd get a Heritage H-150 (which I did).-Cheers

He wants a Gibson, because he's worried about taking a hit if he decides to sell it later. I thought I had him sold on Hamer too, but after we checked a few Gibsons out he was sold on the Gibson again. He is resigned to the fact that he'll have to spend $1400 to get something he likes. I showed him an Edwards online for 1/2 that, but he wasn't swayed.
