dsigman Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Yeah I know I don't post here often at all but, I lurk a lot and have owned about 5 different Hamers. I was hoping for some help, I had a Monaco Elite posted on Ebay and I have no idea why it didn't sell. It is an amazing guitar. I was looking for tips. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=110249329046I probably need more pictures of the back for certain and probably the neck of the guitar...What do you guys think? If anyone is interested I will sell it for what I have into it for the HFC and I could take more pictures.I have $1400 into it and I would be willing to include shipping for that price because I could use the money. I would be also be willing to work a trade plus some cash for a Korina Artist with Humbuckers that hopefully has a pretty deep neck.I appreciate any help you fellas would offer to an outsider.-David
holLoWskull Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Nice looking guitar for sure. If I had to take a guess I'd say the pickguard turned some folks away (was that stock on your guitar)? Although I don't mind a well done modification or two, it does seem like a lot of people here don't like non-reversible modifications of any kind done to a guitar (well in this case, something that looks like it will leave screw holes if removed) unless they can score the guitar on the super cheap. I'd suggest you try putting it up on ebay again (or wherever you feel comfortable advertising it for sale), sometimes it's hitting the timing right of finding the right buyer who's looking for the guitar you're selling.

I will have to take a look at it more deeply and see what it might leave.
Devnor Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I LOVE that guitar...I think the pickguard looks great on it!
Feynman Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 For me personally, I wouldn't have bid because of the pickguard. When I was shopping for a Monaco Elite early last year, I found a few for sale at $1200. As small of a difference as it is, perhaps listing it for $1100 or $1200 might have gotten interest. For some reason, it seems that once at least one person has bid on something it makes it more attractive to others. So maybe, start an auction at $1100 and it may very well end at $1300 or more.I'd like to add the necessary disclaimer that my opinions may be (and probably are) completely full of crap.
atquinn Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I'm thinking the pickguard has alot to do with it. Also, the finish looks too "clownburst" in the pictures (I'm sure it doesn't in person). If it was me, I'd take off the pickguard and try to take some pictures in lower light conditions to make the colors looks like they blend more. I'd also take some close-ups of the pickguard holes and post a couple shots with the pickguard, but for the "wow" shots, I would show it without. Also, it seems Monaco Elites don't get that much respect in terms of resell price, so that could be a factor.-Austin
HamerHokie Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 My opinion - pickguard and common finish color. Plus you might be $200 high.
jisham Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 My opinion - pickguard and common finish color. Plus you might be $200 high.Agreed...to high to start for sure. And, maybe just as important, it's an absolutely shitty time for selling used gear. People gotta buy gas and groceries first, and the used guitar market is way down from what I've seen.

People gotta buy gas and groceries first, and the used guitar market is way down from what I've seen.Yup - timing is everything. March through May is usually a bad time to sell gear in general, from what i've noticed - mostly due to tax time? I usually buy stuff in late March 'cause folks are launching gear to pay their tax bill. The ec stimulus might help a bit this year, but i wouldn't count on it. Maybe some of the dealers around here can say what they've seen.I also agree on the price. Seems like on eBay, starting low helps a bunch. I've seen gear posted for $750 that didn't get a single bid, but relisted for $300 it sells for $850. If you want to avoid risk, you can always put a reserve on the price.

If you want to avoid risk, you can always put a reserve on the price.I've gone through that myself. listed a PRS CU22 as a Buy-it-Now for exactly what I bought it for and got no interest. Relisted it for a starting bid of, I think, $600 (ie, way under market value) and ended up getting a couple hundred more than I paid. IMO, the key is to make the auction no reserve; a low price starting price with a reserve won't fool anyone and will kill interest for alot of people. -Austin
dsigman Posted May 10, 2008 Author Posted May 10, 2008 Thanks a lot for the replies fellas. I am considering keeping it at this point since it is way too nice of a guitar for $1200. I agree on the lower starting price, if I do relist I will probably do it. The pickguard is screwed on so there are a few screw holes that would be remaining. I thought it looked cool when I bought it so I didn't give it a second thought. Oh well thanks again fellas.-David
Thundernotes Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Hey David - are you the guy who bought my Hamer Vanguard a few years back? I kind of miss that guitar....
dsigman Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 Hey David - are you the guy who bought my Hamer Vanguard a few years back? I kind of miss that guitar.... Was it silver with Fralin Unbuckers? If so then yes. That was a wonderful guitar that I shouldn't have sold either. It was amazing. I think I might pick up some unbuckers for this Monaco Elite...
sshan25 Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 I paid $1400 for my Monaco Elite last year. Mine was in showroom condition (and had no pickguard). I'd start around $900 and shoot for twelve. In any case it's a fine instrument, guard or no guard. I can't believe people will pass over a guitar like this and spend a lot more for a run of the mill LP.

I've never heard a guitar sing like that one did. Hopefully she went to a good home.
Zipper Neck Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 This used to be my guitar. I will say that I've never seen a single photograph that could do justice for that finish. You really have to see it in person. This guitar plays and sounds great. I really hated parting with it, and I hope dsigman feels the same way.
