Guest Buck Dharma Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 I'm curious why nobody ever talks about Phantoms. They seem to be pretty cheap on the used market like 350ish. Aren't they good players? or are they just hard to find? or strictly shredder? Someone please fill me in? I have never seen one in person but they look pretty interesting.
Wrecks Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 Shut the fuck up about the mid-80s Prototypes.Best deal you will ever get. Let the guitar be ugly; I'll take care of the handsome.

Nice answer! What are you twelve or something? You wonder why you can't let your kids read this forum with class acts like you.
Guest Buck Dharma Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 Hi, Buck.Nice to meet you.My name is Ed Rechts. Good for you! My 7 year old daughters name is Maggie who just read your wiseass answer. I was thinking of getting her a used Phantom that we found online and were waiting for a useful answer about them. I should no better by now than to ask an actual question about a Hamer guitar and expect to get an answer instead of a bunch of comedian remarks.
Wrecks Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 Oh, Maggie Dharma.....sorry, sweet pea. ....I do love Irish girls.I apologize now for my impudence.Answer: I wasn't aware that Phantoms are easy to get; I'm pretty dumb, and kind of a newbie here, but I always thought that there were several collectors on this MB that were OBSESSED with that model. My mistake, Buck; I was kidding, and trying to make a subtle statement about--what I consider--the most under rated Hamer, a near cousin to the Phantom.Again....I beg forgiveness. And from Maggie.

What are you twelve or something? You wonder why you can't let your kids read this forum with class acts like you.I'll have to agree. Though I do appreciate your apologizing.Anyway, onto the topic:I have a phantom custom (addition of a neck single and flame maple top). I love it. The neck single is very useful for round clean sounds, but it seems a little flabby for distortion (maybe I just have lousy peripheral equipment. This problem could be specific to me). I use it almost exclusively for jazzy stuff. So if she wouldn't need the neck pickup for that application, its not being there wouldn't be much of a problem. I find myself using the bridge pickups more often. The humbucker gives great les paul(ish) bridge sounds, while the single has a great twang (though that can be dialed out with the tone control). My favorite thing, though, is the combination of the bridge single and the humbucker. It has the meat of the humbucker, but the single throws back some extra definition that the humbucker wouldn't have on its own. It's a great guitar and if you're looking at one for around $350, it probably would be a great value.Hope that helps.
David B Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 The 80's Phantoms are a different shape from the 90's Phantoms.Any Phantom is worth more than $350.
DavidE Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 I haven't seen a $350 Phantom in a while. I had one that sounded fantabulous, but the neck was too big even for my taste. I've tried some of the 6 on a side headstock ones and the necks have not been to my taste, though much thinner than my '83. I had a 90's Phantom Custom that was beautiful to look at, sounded fantastic and played great. It was just too heavy for my taste. You can get a very wide range of sounds with a Phantom. Basically a S/S/H setup but a little better for some reason.Paults has been a long-time Phantom player.
Scottcrud Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 My first Hamer was a 97 TV Yellow Phantom that I bought from Shawn Davidson, you know, the one that everyone on this board has owned at one time or another. I thought it was great, I even put a Duncan Hot rails in it. But I'm a Floyd Rose type which is why I sold mine. Other than that, it was a great playing sounding guitar like every Hamer I've owned and played.
paults Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 I've not seen a $350 Phantom for a long time, either. Like DavidE said, I like them - the unusually spaced SSH pickup configuration makes the guitar pretty versatile. They aren't as popular as Specials and Sunbursts because they are a bit on the pointy side : )
serial Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 I haven't seen ANY Phantoms (80s Phantoms only, NOT the 97-98 Proto/Phantoms) in a while. They used to be a regular on eBay and elsewhere, but are now getting nearly impossible to find. I had a near mint one with a Kahler that was really nice (traded it to an HFCer for a teal lefty Phantom of Elliot Easton's). The lefty is the last Phantom I have left after owning a half dozen over the years. I really like those guitars and actually prefer them to the Prototypes in many respect. The old Prototypes are much smaller bodied (and necked) guitars, but are very cool in their own right. The three coil setup is one of my favorites. As for Rechts, you'll get used to him, he's a valued board member. Oh yeah, and he IS housetrained!
BCR Greg Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 PhantomGT has one in my shop for $550. It's got the rare Sustain Block trem(no wrenches!) and is in fine shape.
Andrew Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 Great guitar! Has it lost its little locking screws on the Hamerlock tuners? It is a Phantom A5, though. A5 looks like AS apparently, for Andy Summers. GT pic. below. Andrew. http://uk.geocities.com/largeat/index.html
BCR Greg Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 PhantomGT is the owner, Andrew. He has a GT, and this was supposed to help as a backup. He needs another GT.
Andrew Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 That's almost too confusing. So he's selling this one to avoid being confused with PhantomA5?Who is PhantomA5?What about the illegitimate children, Phantom and PhantomCustom? And the long-lost relative, Phantom12?
Guest galejt Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 PhantomGT has one in my shop for $550. It's got the rare Sustain Block trem(no wrenches!) and is in fine shape. What is the neck like (frets, shape, slender like a love starved beatch)? And WTF is a sustain block tremblo?Uniformed.

HAHAHAHAHAAAA!Jim is PhantomGT, named after his favorite guitar. The A5 was to be a backup for his GT, since we haven't been able to find another one in a while.Phantom12? Maybe YOU can be Phantom12 , Doc!
paults Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 What about the overachieving cousin, phantomA7? "I am your Motherbucker, Lukather.." Hamer Phantom Menace
phantomgt Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 Welcome to the Phantom Feud...."Please welcome the A7 family....!"( applause )"And over here we have the Protoype family....!"( applause )"10 point question, 100 people surveyed....""What's the most widely sought after Phantom on the market ?"( buzzer )"A7?"The Phantom A5 that Phantom GT is in need of selling?"Survey says......!"(beep)"Phantom A5 is the # 1 answer! ":-)I figured I'd make trying to sell something a little more fun.But yes, it has the original locking fine tuners for the tuning machines, and the truss rod cover plate. The only thing that's not original, is the neck p/u is an HS-3.That pic is the only one I have of it, and I usually keep the locking fine tuners off, since I kept it set up properly, that it didn't hardly go out of tune at all. And the truss cover was off since I regularly maintained a proper neck curvature.Anyone interested, contact BCRGreg.Thanks....Jim
