joshkava Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I just bought that greenie special from craigslist. it has a bill lawrence in the bridge but i want to restore it to as original as possible
cmatthes Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Congrats on a GREAT score! Awesome Special. That's the replacement you need, but expect to pay 25% or more of what you just scored the Special for to nab one!
bubs_42 Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 No kiding. I now have 3, 79 Hamers and only one had the original Bridge pickup. O' a 4th one on the way with an original Bridge pickup. The others I scored sqaure legged Dimarzio Paf's and they sound the same. Just go on ebay and pick up an older dimarzio PAF and ask for the a reading. Try to shoot for the Mid 8's, " That will do pig"...
princeofdarkness56 Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Good hunting, but not for nothing, there is a reason why everyone replaced the bridge pickup in those old ones. They were weak.

I disagree. The bridge pickup is a good representation of a PAF. A PAF bridge was not popular in the '80s and '90s and so most were swapped out. The sustainblock has a unique thing going on. Also, the bridge pickup's close location might cause you to play with the height adjustment of BOTH of the pickups to get a good balance. Those guitars sound very good with the original pickups.
joshkava Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 believe it or not.. i actually found that one on craigslist myself before i saw it on here! i was doing crazy craigslist searches for vintage hamers but from NOW on.. now that i know about this board.. ill be looking (and posting) here first ...not to mention my finder's fee!! I might just go with the new 36th anniversary dimarzio PAF if i can't find a vintage one. ive never used dimarzio's before. ive always been a Duncan man.. and VERY satisfied.. but i want to be true to the original if i can I also found another good craigslist score.. an 84 hamer phantom with a motherbucker and the single coil in the neck - needs a new pickguard and some kahler parts... but other than that it's all stock. black on black on black on black on black.. pretty badass looking. a 'phantom' indeed. Im gonna restore both and keep the one i like better.. i know the necks are supposed to be very different.. very different pickup sounds, etc.. --> QUOTE(David B @ Dec 12 2008, 06:15 PM) ← The new Dimarzio PAFs sound good to me.
