Selling an amp on craigslist and got this response ... scam alert?

"Thanks for the response.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay by a money order as its the only way i can pay you at the moment.I will make arrangement for the pickup after payment have been received by you.I don't mind adding an extra $30 so you can keep it in my favor.I would have loved to come take a look at it but i am presently out of town,send me some pictures.Reply with your name,phone # and mailing address where payment will be sent.I will let you know how i intend to pick it up.Please take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me.

Expecting to hear from you soon.

In addition to the wording being a dead giveaway, always be suspicious of responses that don't specifically mention your item in the text.

Whenever I list something on Craigslist I put the statement "Cash only and local pickup only" in my ad.

When (not if) I get one of the scam emails I respond by saying "My ad clearly states 'cash only and local pickup only.' If you are willing to abide by those terms, please feel free to contact me again." I have yet to receive a response.

Yeah, thats what I did ... I was going to send him the police dept address Attn. Inspector so and so, fraud unit ... but I was too lazy to look up the information

total scam. i've gotten the exact message before. the demand that you consider it sold and take it off is also something I'd never do.

How does the scam work? Is someone using fake money orders?

Yup, counterfeit money order or counterfeit bank check. They will frequently make it out for substantially more than the selling price and ask the the difference in cash be given to the courier or otherwise transferred back. Then a week later the money order is bounced back to the bank and the seller is out the item and the cash.
