BTMN Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 So I had to use a case to take my Dean P90 Z somewhere today and in that one's case was this lil '86 Hamer Scepter. Menagerie of parts it seems from appearances but everyone is of original era if not the "right" color. I like the "mutt" look. It hides the Beast inside. I dont get some of my horde out enough. This seems like one of those after the hour I spent after I came back home with the P90 Z. I went to put the Scepter away in the case and while carrying it to the case, I said to myself, hmmm let me play this a lil while. I have not had it out in months, it was barely out of tune, and the Floyd is blocked but so what. The Duncan Distortion bridge and Pearly Gates neck pickup combo is real crunchy and tasty. Thanks to Hamstd for the basic unit and a few HFCers that contributed parts. Life IS Good! Show us your mutt that howls!
Rodan Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 That there's one of my favorite pointy's of all time! My first one's more of a stepchild... It's absolute NOS, but the Chicago Factory DID stick gold Dunlop buttons on it. I think the usual knobs were a dull nickel finish, too... Solid though, and pretty ballsy sounding. My Mirage I has locking Schallers instead of Sperzel tuners, but it's never been mod'd, either. I always chicken-out before modifying nice axes. I got nothin' for this topic...
BTMN Posted April 13, 2010 Author Posted April 13, 2010 No one has a muttly looking Hamer that actually is a really great guitar? Edited to add: the two above dont look muttly at all. They look rather well kept. Post your scratched, checked, chipped, Hamer instead.
BTMN Posted April 17, 2010 Author Posted April 17, 2010 AHROOOOOOOWWWW! Well this thread went no where!
Rodan Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Wait. I've got SOMEthing. I bought this Chap' after it'd suffered some light abuse. The color has yellowed a bit...noticeably... There's a small but ugly ding in the face that I've covered with a stylish dragon sticker/tattoo. Not TOO bad... but someone did a "setup" that involved a honking wood screw in the baseplate, which split the B saddle. That's an Ibanez saddle in there, along with 2 other, ugly replacement screws... I'm working on a rehab in this area. More to come. Invisibly, there's a noisy pot that needs replacement, too. But, as the invitation 1st suggested, it sounds great otherwise. The dragon will probly have to stay...
tomteriffic Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 OK, I'll play. My beat-up black Special a true tree-fitty wonder. It started out like this, although the picture doesn't show the myriad of dings, gouges and scrapes: It went to Unka Greg and was converted to a wrap-tail and set up for slide: Later on, I saw a guitar that GMP had done and, considering that nobody was going to love this mutt like me, I decided to do a photo-reverse of the GMP guitar and came up with this: This ol' dawg still howls. I practice to Geoff Hartwell's slide instruction video with it and when I go to one particular blues jam, the host (who has a good half-dozen albums to his credit) always asks if I brought this one. It usually winds up in his hands instead of mine.
Jason01 Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 This ones got battle scars, is ugly, and just screams.
savethematches Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I think I might need a Scepter . . . or a Scarab . . . or a Steve Stevens . . .
mathman Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I think I might need a Scepter . . . or a Scarab . . . or a Steve Stevens . . . or all of the above!
veatch Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Not a Hamer, but i think this one applies. Got it at a pawn shop for silly cheap, but it had obviously been sitting out unprotected for a looooong time... likely in a garage by the looks of it. The fretboard was covered in something that resembled used chewing tobacco. Electronics were completely shot, except (fortunately) for the pups. Here are some before/after shots. Note the "befores" were actually after the first pass at wiping off the crud (excuse the man-cave in progress background): I left all the dings and love marks - just re-wired it and cleaned 'er up with elbow grease. Elbow grease and ketchup for the brass. Back to the point - the thing howls. A couple years back, i considered moving it on, but i'm glad i didn't. It's a joy to play and very hard to put down. It has the reverse phase neck pup in it plus coil taps, so it's a ton of fun to play with. Ah-oooooooooooh (warewolves of London...)
velorush Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Dude! Where's the Wonderbar? I remember playing a white [Wonderbar-equipped] one just like that... a loooooooooooooong time ago! Ithad a red logo and all black hardware. Hung in a friend's store for ages.
veatch Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Dude! Where's the Wonderbar? Took me a while to find one without a trem...
