Czech-made Dean Cadillac Ultima - SOLD!

$525 includes PayPal fees and shipping for Continental US. Non con-US, let me know, but shipping costs for a guitar overseas seems to be pretty high right now. Probably too much for a guitar in this price range...

The offer for the choice of case still applies (see below).

-----------------

Dean Cadillac, i believe it is a 1999, but if anyone can confirm or deny, let me know. It is the "Ultima" model (thanks Gene and Brandon for the info!) in trans black with gold hardware. Made in the Czech Republic - very good quality compared to the Asian made models.

I'll say the outside pics are a tad "generous" in regards to the top. It is a very nice looking top, but the finish hides the figure a bit, IMO. Still, a great playing and sounding guitar. Neck is wide (which i like) but way too thin for me, so i'm letting this one go.

Pups are Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates. To the best of my understanding, these are the pups that belong in the guitar, though these particular pups are not the originals. The original pups were gone when i got the guitar. These pickups do sound very good in this guitar which can be heard here under the "1999 Dean Cadillac Ultima / Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates" row on the Cork Sniffer page: Guitar and Buckers Cork Sniffing These recordings are of this guitar with these pickups.

Some mods:

I did replace the nut with a Bone nut. The original nut was graphite and was actually cut wrong. The bone nut is a big improvement, but i would recommend using chapstick or nutsauce on this guitar with such an extreme angle on the G and D strings. The guitar does stay in tune quite well after you get it there, but new strings take a bit of extra work. Note the Dean logo and wings are inlaid Mother of Pearl, not a decal.

I replaced the knobs. When i got it, the knobs had been replaced already, so i went with these:

I also replaced the toggle switch with a Switchcraft (big improvement over the stock switch) as well as the tip with a gold tip. I may have a spare cream tip around here if you prefer that:

The pup rings were cracked and pretty well shot when i got the guitar. Unfortunately, the pup routes are much wider than your standard ring, so i had a custom set of rings made by Dave at FretsOnTheNet.com. They are actually black anodized rings that i painted cream. As a bonus, the rings actually run parallel to the strings like they should (the originals did not):

The guitar is in reasonable shape overall, but it was a gigging guitar, so there is a fair share of wear. Frets are in good shape:

I completely re-wired this guitar. Not my cleanest work by a long-shot, but a big improvement from where it was. The pots are original, but the caps were replaced with orange drops. I also shielded the back of the cover since the cavity was already painted with conductive paint:

A previous owner also moved the strap button to the top of the guitar (which was a bad place - the guitar was very neck-heavy with the button there) I moved it back behind the neck joint where it should be. That position seems to bother some folks, but not me. My first guitar was an SG, so i guess i'm used to it. Anyways, the guitar is better balanced there. The hole left behind was an eye-sore, so i filled it. The fill is smooth to the touch, but can clearly be seen. Note i put the original buttons back on. I have a gold set of Dunlop Dual Design locks that i'll throw on if you want those instead.

Only other thing to note is the back of the headstock. If you look close, you will see finish cracks coming from the mounting screws of the tuners for the E, A, and D strings. These were there when i got the guitar and have not been an issue. I suspect these are due to the original case being too shallow for the guitar. The headstock actually rests on the bottom of the case. I've seen a few of these guitars, and a few had a finish crack around the neck joint. I've seen one other with finish cracks similar to these as well.

As mentioned, there is some fair wear. Belt wear, pick swirls, etc. Nothing too noticeable or photograph-able, but there are some scratches on the back that i could capture:

As far as the case, if you're an HFC member if good standing, i'll give you the choice of the original hardshell case or a new Dean rectangular case. The new case is a lot heavier, but it does fit the guitar a whole lot better.

Great Top on Her!

What's the neck like???

Wide at the nut: just a hair under 1 3/4".

0.825" thick at the first fret, and 0.865" thick at the twelvth.

Not uber-thin, i'd call it a medium.

I had one exactly like this one about 6-7 years ago. I got it from a local musician friend, Mack King, who has since passed on.

All of the Czech Dean guitars are great players and are top quality, huge bang for the buck guitars.

FFS, if I hadn't just bought my blue quilt Czaddy right before this popped up, it would already be here. You CAN'T GET THIS MUCH GUITAR for 650 anywhere outside a Czech Dean.

Dude, you're killing me.

I've liked Caddy's ever since I saw Kerry Livgren playing one with Kansas in 1979. Been following your attempts to get rid of this one.

I've spent my toy budget for the next few months but if you're fed up and interested in trades, I have lots of things I could throw into the mix. Otherwise, I wish you well.

Thanks, Kurt. Not really looking for trades at the moment.

Didn't sell this time on the Bay, so it is still available. re-modifying the original post...

Have you tried the Dean Forum?

Some good guys on there.

I would, but i'm not a member there. I don't want to be too low brow with the first post being - "Hey? Look what i wanna sell..."

That being said, if you wanna post a link, i would be much obliged.

Edited to add: I can be reached by PM on the board if interested
