Looking for a vintage Hamer Sunburst

Hello everybody, and greetings from Italy !!!

First post here, as I started to be interested in Hamer guitars only recently...

The story is that I sold my 20 years old PRS custom 24 because after so many years, and a CD, I wanted to try something... different. Even if my PRS had the headstock cracked (repaired of course) I was able to sell it for a nice amount of money, that now let me think "ok, what guitar can I buy?".

My first choice was a Les Paul, as I am a huge fan of Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Martin Barre (Jethro Tull); but accidentally I came across a Barre's interview where he explained what guitars he used through the years. I was very surprised to read that after the Les Paul he moved to the Hamer, and he has found it BETTER. Also, one of my favourite Tull's album is Bursting Out (live) where I thought he was playing a Les Paul, but it was a Hamer !!! Back to my parent's house I have the long playing, and the rear photo shows it clearly !!

So I started to learn about these guitars that I didn't know before, listening to some demos and reading reviews; I think it is the guitar that I want, that's why I registered to this forum and posted this topic.

I've been warned not to buy a Hamer Sunburst older then 1982, as they started do increase the numbers loosing the quality. Someone will correct me if this is not true.

So you can consider me a cash buyer of a Hamer Sunburst let's say year 1978-1979, or even later if they are same quality; I would prefer a flame top rather than a single colour, but I will consider any colour you have to offer. The shipping shouldn't be a problem; I've received a squier from the USA last year...

I've seen some vintage Hamer Sunburst sold for a price between 1.200$ and 2000$, but I'm not an expert; I only hope that if someone can make me an offer it will be a honest price

Ok, hope to hear from you soon !!!

Cheers

Massimo

You'll always get a fair & honest price here mate. This is the best guitar forum/place I know. I got a cracking deal here last year - much better than if I'd bought in UK/EU

That line about Sunbursts not being any good after '82 is complete crap.

They are all pretty nice out of that first generation.

If anything, you may want to steer away from some of the older Bound/crowned models (pre '79) because some (not all) had some neck twisting issues.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm in the right place mate, thanks :(

Yeah, but if it's straight now, after 30 years on, it's not a problem. Everybody know the Bound & Crowned ones sound better

Hey, what does Bound & Crowned ones mean? Can you explain to a newbie?

Hamer Sunburst Custom - with bound body & neck - and block inlays in the fretboard:

Ordinary Sunburst. Bound body, no neck binding, dots:

This one is the most common. Ad a couple of hundred dollars, or more, for the Custom version.

1982; refinished

not sure if I should let her go

Nice !!! Not the colour I'm after but very nice...

Just a question: I usually see the neck pu black&white, the bridge completely white. Why yours has both b&w?

If you decide to let her go you can PM the price ...

Maybe the pictures don´t show the color too accurate; it´s black; gloss dark black

At least the bridge PU is not original (maybe the neck PU is); I´d have to check

If you can check, thank you. I'd like an original guitar in every parts.

Btw, in the first picture it seems to be blue...

I thought the first Specials were made in 1980?

Very Late 80 I do believe. My old computer is shot but I have stack of ebay listing on the darn thing and I've got a picture of a really early one without the extra cut out on the lower horn. Maybe a Prototype? Heck if I know.

I will say this to the kind sure that is searching for one the 81 and 82 that I have played sounded as good as the all of the 79's that I've owned. Good Luck.

It's a Sunburst - not a special. One of the few naturals made in '78.
