morningstar Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 I have a H S H Chapparal to refinish. The current finish is just plain fugly.Does anybody know if removing the current finish is included in the cost of refinishing?Any opinions in which is good for a white refin? Snowy or Creamy white?thanksmorningstar
cmatthes Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Depends on where you go - definitely ask up front. Some places charge a prep fee, which includes removal of the old finish, filling small dents/holes, etc.
morningstar Posted April 2, 2011 Author Posted April 2, 2011 Thanks ChrisI took the evening and removed the fugly finish. It came off reasonably easy with the old heat and scraper method. Some earlier owner covered up a nice bicycle seat red sparkle finish with a heavy coat of black schmutz. It also looks like the same doofus tried to undo his handiwork without heating the finish. Blasphemy. What is that layer under the original red metal flake? It's like a coat of Elmer's or something. Still looking for opinions on what white would look best on a H S H Chapparal (with boomers).Snow white?Vintage White?Ice Pearl?Maybe go back to stingray seat red sparkle? Blue?thanksmorningstar

It could be primer... that said, I think our man stike could probably do a kickass jobif you decided to go sparkle...
Jem Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 What is that layer under the original red metal flake? It's like a coat of Elmer's or something. morningstarSanding sealer - like a primer. If it's flat, leave it on.
morningstar Posted April 2, 2011 Author Posted April 2, 2011 Interesting. It was not flat, it was patchy and partially absent from the prior efforts. As it came off, the intact areas underneath were smooth as could be. Previously "stripped" have a "dirty" look. A little filler and some sanding is going to be necessary. What's a good product for filler? The old scraper tracks are like "worming".Still looking for suggestions on colors. I am thinking classy.Thanksmorningstar
serial Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Ice Pearl is a fantastic finish and I don't really like white guitars at all.
doody Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Ice Pearl is a fantastic finish and I don't really like white guitars at all.This.If it was me, id fill in that middle PU cavity now while you have it apart and stripped, but that's just me.
morningstar Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 Ice Pearl looks good. I will leave the final call to Stike as he will know what will turn out best.I was going to stick a JB Jr neck pup in the middle slot. I try not to modify guitars. My last Chapparal had the H S H config (for a sustainiac) and I was surprised the middle was useful and not a hindrance. I must be odd, but I like the middle and bridge wired together in the "bridge" position. Redneck motherbucker?Thanksmorningstar
