Recommendations for a CD Player

Question

Posted

Any recommendations for a CD Player? Single CD tray is fine. Must have S/PDIF copper or optical out. I'd prefer to buy used, so it does not have to be something current - just reliable and good fidelity. :)

Thanks.

Editted to add: Remote is a must - variable pitch control would be a nice to have.

Thanks again.

Emotiva ERC-2. Professional review here. Upconverts to 24-bit 384KHz sampling. Weighs 17.5 lbs and built like a tank.

Tanx, guys.

That Emotiva looks promissing - even has AES/EBU - big plus. Price tag may put the purchase on the back shelf for a bit, but that looks to be a killer uinit for the price.

Are you planning to use it with a DAC with AES/EBU digital input? Which DAC?

Excellent question.

Two uses - general control room: get my ears tuned into a good mix before i butcher a mix - in this case it will be connected into a digital mixing board (Ramsa DA-7) and just use the (reasonably decent) on board DAC.

Second use is to proof masters, in which case it will be going into an Apogee (can't recall the model - not the standard studio style model - some oddball 12 channel model they had for Cinema use - supposed to be the same DACs, though, unless i misunderstood reality...) Whether the Emotive or the Apogee has a better DAC is a reasonable question - the Emotive is much newer technology, but i've had pretty good luck with the Apogee.

I had a pretty good TEAC player that bit the dust about 10 years ago. Replaced it with a Denon DVD player (DVD-1920? i think...) that i found dirt cheap, but now i'm starting to get occasional pops that sound like word clock issues, but it isn't a word clock issue (just sounds like it...) Figured it was time to get something better for my needs (never had much luck with DVD players playing CDs - they do OK, but the TEAC sure sounded a *lot* better...) The Denon can move to the family room.

Any thoughts on the Marantz CD500X players? Likely not the same league as the Emotive, but less than half the price used. <use Captain Caveman voice>Family-man no have big money for noisy room no more... :(

Anywho, i ramble. Tanx again.

I've never been inclined to buy used CD players because 1) they don't last that long in the first place (e.g., your current situation) and 2) Designers are still finding and fixing shortcomings in CD redbook playback. The Marantz CD5004 (the current model) looks pretty good. It doesn't have analog or digital XLR outputs but it does have pitch control. Marantz's CD and SACD players have been well regarded. Still, comparing it to the Emotiva, the Emotiva upconverts the digital output to 24/384KHz, which is reported to sound better than the standard CD digital format. It's also more heavily built--it weighs 50% more than the Marantz. This translates into heavier casework and transformers, which generally translates into better sound. Heavier casework usually means lower microphonic grunge and less jitter. When you compare a new Emotiva to a new Marantz CD5004, the Emotiva is 50% beefier with state-of-the-art digital upconverting for only $100 more.

Either would be a good player, but you know which way I lean.

I still have Houses of the Holy on 8-Track, so, yeah, that would be a plus. :)

Has anyone created an iPod app that throws a track change KA-CHUNK in at the appropriate places of 70's era albums, just to complete the nostalgia experience?

If you would have asked me a week ago, i would have posted a sample.

I put a ka-chunk after the end of the last song on a project a while back. I was just cleaning out some disk space just last week and saw that file.

I played it.

I laughed.

I deleted the file.

Recently bought this one from Onkyo, and I am very pleased with it :

I am a fan of Onkyo, I guess.

Do you listen to SACDs? Does your Oppo DV-980H still work? I remember you've had SACD players going back eight years when you had a Philips SA-963.

I like Onkyo too. I used their A-9555 integrated amp to anchor my 2-channel LP system for a few years. It's a nice unit and I still have it.

The Oppo is stil working - the philips died.

Still playing SACD's - but they are becoming hard to find.

Just found this set a couple of weeks ago :

I recently bought the Onkyo TX-8050 - a great 2 channel receiver for the living room. Very affordable too and with all the new technology on board.

Hooked up with Canton LE-170 speakers (great match).

The music room has the Oppo, a Technics 1200,an old Luxman hybrid amp and my beloved Celestion Ditton 66's.

Works for me !

Amazon currently offers over 8500 SACD titles, and there are over 3,000 titles from Acoustic Sounds.

I remember when your Philips died. I had the same model, and I checked every possible source for a replacement laser assembly Stateside with no luck. So I got the Oppo to replace it and I still like it better.

If you dig deeper in the Amazon listings - there's a lot not available and a lot very high prized....

Seems they don't re-release on sacd anymore too.
