Thanks guys

the Serial is 600487....if that helps nail it down even more.

My buddy owns this guitar and when he bought it the guy he bought it from told him that he bought it new in 1975.

So whats correct Murkat or the link posted?

According to that gibson serial PDF 6 digit numbers were used up until 1975??

I'd go with what Murkat said. Wouldn't a '75 have a pancake body, anyway? The maple fretboard is interesting...not something I'd want but to each their own. Funny that the tuners are Ovation-branded Schallers, but no added tuner screw holes that I can see.

I wasn't really questioning J, he is one of the few I trust on this stuff, I just like a good guitar mystery....lol

I don't remember who hooked my buddy up with them tunners but they dropped right in with no mods.

Maple boards were offered on Customs in 76-. Pots are 77. I thought they went to "first and fifth" serial code in 77. I'd guess 76 or early 77 (can't see the week code on the pots). 76 was the "sticker serial".

If it's a '76 im in trouble because thats my birth year........would a better pic of the pot codes help?

a better pic would help.

Keep in mind...

Gibson hodge podge leftovers together (GCS still does).

A body or neck, or... could be shelfed for years,

then someone gets a wild hair up there ass to make the number/ quota.

hodge podge

LOL!!!!!!

Thanks for the help J......Ill get a better pic up later

I'm serious. My 83 Gibson Korina Explorer is an example. Parts here, body there, neck overthere... build it, run it!

A non complete guitar can be shelved for many years due to repair, finish work, out of spec. employee fukups, etc.

I love history lessons, thanks J!!!!!

Here is a good clear shot of one of the pots, all of them are the same best I can tell

pot is 1977, first 9 weeks of the year. ( see a zero, so whatever # is buried under the solder)

But,

that is when the pots were made.

Final assembly would be in early 77.

who knows when body, neck, etc. where done.

body appears to be leftovers, stuck on a shelf tilll someone found it, ran it.

It's a jem for sure.

I remember those maple boards, I had picked up the then-new nice big fancy Gibson catalog (had a white heavy paper embossed cover, about 8 x 11 or thereabouts size-wise), sometime in that time frame from my local music store. I remember looking at it often, trying to figure out which guitars were all mahogany instead of the ones with maple necks. Seems to me like that was only the SGs and single-cut LP Specials back then, but I could be wrong.

A '77 would have a decal serial number like a '76, would it not?

yes / no.

A lot of parts, bodies, necks, etc. got shuffled and shuttled between Kalamazoo and Nashville.

There's a bunch of fucked up mutts out there just like this one. Coin toss.

Jay's point above makes perfect sense-especially with a model like this that wasn't so prevalent. Easy to assume they made a bunch of necks in 76 when these came out and if orders were slow, wait until you needed one to ship.
