Feynman Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 What are you using to get it over the top? Sorry - I'm no help. I just wanted to say something clever.

burningyen Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Gilmourish.com is a great resource if you're curious about how GIlmour gets his tones.
hamersandstrats Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I've had Strats with all kinds of pickups-alnico magnets, ceramic magnets, noiseless, mid-boosted lace sensors. You can always get a good Strat tone, even on the bridge pickup by turning your amp up, and adjusting the volume and tone controls on the guitar. My favorite pedals for the Strat are the TS-9 tubescreamer and the Proco Rat. Like a wise man once said, "All you need is a Strat and a Rat!"Certain Fuzz pedals also thicken up the sound nicely-Fuzz Faces like Hendrix used, Big Muffs, etc..
Disturber Posted April 2, 2012 Author Posted April 2, 2012 Ha, ha. I was on it again yesterday. Checked the compartment in the guitar case and found a note that I changed strings in june 2010 - ouch. New strings, put on 0.09's this time as I wanted to hear if it would give a little less "string" in the sound. It worked. Now it sounds stellar even with loads of gain. This T-62 likes the 0.09's better than tens, sounds smoother when the volume is way up. Pure nickel on the high strings. Much better. I'm home now, this is how it should sound. Such an easy fix....
bobbymack Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I too avoided strats live for a good while, but have learned some useful stuff. First, as HHB says, ya gotta have a preamp type cleanish boost always on at the beginning of the chain. I like Tim, Durham Sex Drive, MXR Micro Amp if you're on a budget, etc...sweetens the tone while making it alot "bigger" and making downline effects more responsive. Then I learned of a wiring mod from John Suhr which bypasses the tone control in the 2 and 4 quack positions...so you get no volume loss and more stratty quack. Then find some pickups that you like.
KH Guitar Freak Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I've never had much problems with getting good tone from strats. Perhaps trying different pickups might help...
jwhitcomb3 Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I think it's hard to get a bad Strat tone. Agreed. Keeping the fuckers in tune is the problem.

Never thought of that, but now that you mention it, I don't know that I'veever used my tone knob when in those positions. Huh! - worth a try to see.
Disturber Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 T62's don't have a tone pot. Tone pots are for pussies! It sounds great now btw, new 0.09 all nickel strings made a world of difference.
