mudshark Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Here's a video I surely plan to own; looks like a natural for someone whose soldering skills are anemic as mine:http://www.terrydownsmusic.com/solder_video/soldervideo.html
SteveE9C6 Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 BTW... I know Terry. He is an excellent pedal steel player as well as a guitarist. A nice guy...

His video on Roy Nichol's guitar style is reputed to be excellent as well. His posts at the TDPRI board seem to indicate he's a really nice fellow.
MCChris Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 I've heard that Cold Heat thing is totally worthless for musical instrument applications. Can anyone confirm?
silentman Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Nonsense, they say it great for musicians in the commercial. It has to be true.
Guest Buck Dharma Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 I bought that piece of crap at Radio Shack. It is too big to do most jobs and yes it broke almost immediately. I couldn't get it hot enough to solder an RS Guitarworks Electronic kit into my Fatdog LP.
mudshark Posted October 6, 2005 Author Posted October 6, 2005 Cold Heat is for pussies. Kinda like back in the day when cold nuclear fission suddenly seemed to be popping up everywhere, eh?
tomteriffic Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Cold Heat = Cold Solder Joint (assuming you can get it to work at all)
SteveB Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 the rub on the "Cold Heat" is that it gets hot enough to melt the solder but doesn't get the metal heated for proper bonding. Ie, a Cold Solder Joint as TT mentioned. If thats the case then I'm sure you'd be screwed trying to get anything to stick to a pot. Haven't actually tried it myself though, I'm perfectly happy with my dual heat Radio Shack solder station.
MCChris Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Nonsense, they say it great for musicians in the commercial. It has to be true. Yeah. The only thing I've ever bought off a TV ad was that elongated spray nozzle thingy that's supposed to spray gutters clean and eliminate the need to get up on a ladder. I've sat on bidets that put out more pressure than that POS.
BadgerDave Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 I've sat on bidets that put out more pressure than that POS. Interesting comment from the purveyor of the "Throne of Humiliation"!
MCChris Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 "Throne of Humiliation" You forgot linkage. Can I help it if I have real-world experience with this stuff?Did I just say that?
Submariner85 Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Hey, Is that Cold Heat any good? I almost got one but bought a Weller Plug in gun instead. Nevermind. I read the rest of the posts.
