Finish yellowing

A project that will be coming up soon is a 'refurb' job on Stonge's old Graphic Speical which he inexplicably sold to me. It needs a complete electronics re-work and I thought that, while I was at it, I might do something about the yellowing of the finish.

It's got more than its fair share of bumps, bruises and dings (hell, it came from Stonges Island of Misfit Guitars), which is fine by me, but I thought if I could undo the yellowing of the white on it, it would make the graphic more striking and stand out a bit more.

Is this yellowing just endemic to the clear coat, or is there some sort of Meguiar's product (or similar) that can take some of it off?

Not in my experience. I've had two white Hamers - one translucent and one solid. Both of them yellowed severely.

The one on the left is the translucent white; it was as white as the other one under the pickguard. Chris Matthes has the 4-string now.

Kiz, I do too, but, on this one, the whole thing is kind of mottled. If it was more even, I wouldn't mind so much. Anyway, I was thinking that, as long as I've got it taken apart, I might see about doing something about it.

It looks like what you have there is a yellowed finish that has been worn through to a whiter "layer" - notice the forearm and picking areas.

I wouldn't change a thing.

But that's me.

My (formerly) white LP is the same way, as is my '81 Special (but it's grey and not so noticable).

I like it. It looks comfortable.

I know what you're saying. I think the "yellowing" would look cooler if the graphic wasn't involved. But being that there is a graphic I could see why tomteriffic would want the paint cleaner or back to white.

Nitrocellulose lacquer yellows, you're stuck with it.
