You can get killer tones with a small vintage tube combo amp miked into the PA. Clapton's opening riff on "Layla" was played through a tweed Champ. There are lots of little 5-10 watt 8" combos from the '50s and '60s from Supro, Pine Electronics of Canada, Airline, Silvertone, Danelectro, etc. that will do this. Although these amps are a bit bass shy compared to 12" combos, the close miking adds a proximity bass boost that makes the amp sound much bigger.

I like the 609/906( 906 has high & low roll off ) cuz it sounds great & you can hang it over the amp with no stand needed . I like the ev a lot as well, I use a 408, 90s version of the 478 for snare all the time ( works pretty well for acoustic live as well ) Both the ev & sennhieser are hypercardiod where the 57 is not ( if bleed or feed back is a problem ).

I like the Palmer PDI-09 for running the guitar direct to the P.A. without using a mike onstage. If I want to use a microphone onstage, the Shure SM-57 is what I use. I like the Sennheiser mikes that were mentioned as well.

I've used the Redbox and Palmer PD-09, both passive stomp size DI attenuators. The Palmer costs twice as much, but really delivers in a way the HK doesn't. I've also used an Axetrak and various preamps with speaker sims, like the Mesa V-Twin and HK Tubeman Plus rack.

if you want to use your amp, the PD09 is worth the extra bucks. Clean is at a premium with most DI, and the Palmer pulls it off the best for me. Never mind it's the cheaper cutdown version of their fancier rack units, which have star endorsements (Keef!). It also has more settings, which are useful in getting different amps to play nice with the signal chain.

I've recorded hours of great stuff with the DI setups, but once you get the mic setup going, it's hard to go back to the compressed limited dynamics of DI. I still use DI to record bass and piezo, but there's nothing like an SM57 on a hot cab for guitars. I'm using both an SM57 as well as the Senny e609, some of the last bargains in the music world. Wish I'd figured it out sooner, but obviously, space and noise have been huge considerations for me living in NY.
