ib2010 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Renewed, super respect for J.M. as a fine, naturally gifted guitar player. Just watched a full live set, 1:15, from way back, where she's laying the groove on an Ibanez G.B., with Jaco, Pat Metheny. ( the youtube path is----- pat metheny joni mitchell jaco pastorius )
dragan Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 always loved Joni , especially mingus , saw the tour with jaco & pat methany band in the 80s
anotherfreak Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 agreed!a little unorthodox, but a lot of hard work has gone into what she does and it shows!
G Man Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 From my understanding, she makes up many of her own tunings, which my theory challenged mind finds very impressive.
kanegon Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I love her C G D F C E tuning! Not sure who else uses it, but it's amazing what she's done with it, from big yellow taxi to coyote. Genius!
django49 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I am not sure if it is well known, but she had polio at a young age and has weakened muscular strength. That is why she uses lighter and smaller guitars like the Parker Fly and Ibanez George Benson (both of which are great guitars, BTW).I am not sure if her alternative tunings are also a way to get the chords/notes she likes with less effort. Whatever, it is playing/singing/composing, she certainly qualifies as "genius" in my book.
jwhitcomb3 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 always loved Joni , especially mingus , saw the tour with jaco & pat methany band in the 80sENVIOUS!!!
a.bandini Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 She is certainly a phenomenal talent. I don't love everything she has recorded, but I do love a lot of it. She's been playing in the background of my life for four decades or so, which is kind of incredible.
