Tres Aardvarks Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I know this has come up before but I couldn't find it (easily). Which model tuners are on the B12(2004 B12M)? There are 3 different sized tuners, and I'd really like to reduce some of the headstock dive. http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Tuning_Machines/Tuner_Parts/Schaller_Replacement_Knobs.html#details
cmatthes Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 There are 4 M6 and 4 M6 minis, in addition to the bass tuners.A set of each of those would work.
Tres Aardvarks Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 Thanks! Which is lighter: the pearloid or the ebony? Ooof, and I just realized that'll leave me with 4 chrome knobs, and 8 replacements. Any line on replacements for the full size bass tuners?
cmatthes Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I think the difference is negligible, at least in my experience. You'll be reducing the headstock weight by several ounces, easily, and it DOES make an instant, noticeable difference. I still haven't located a source for the regular bass tuners that I like, but if you find that, let us know!!
tobereeno Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 it requires drilling, but Sperzel put together a custom set for me. MUCH lighter at the headstock, but it did change the vibe of the instrument. Not worse, just different. but I feel ya bro, the DC body exacerbates neck heaviness.
RobB Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Yeah, Tobe says it best. You may want to try pearloid buttons before you go replacing the machine heads. That said, l ordered some Grover Imperial pearloid buttons for my Newport to relieve some of the neck heaviness. Wrong move! Totally changed the character/balance of the guitar. Back on went the stock, stair step buttons. Actually balances on a strap pretty well, all said.
chromium Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Sperzel put together a custom set for meThat looks cool!
tobereeno Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I had an unmodified B12S and the neck loved to dive. there's a lot I can tolerate with an instrument but neck-heaviness sucks balls.but pulling weight off the headstock changes the sound. it's subtle, but it's there. maybe 5% less thump and 5% more twang?it's a tough decision if you absolutely cannot tolerate a change in the vibe of the instrument because it really does help the balance of the instrument.

Totally going with buttons first, I have no desire to let my wife see me taking drills to the bass she bought me!!
Shark Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Yeah, Tobe says it best. You may want to try pearloid buttons before you go replacing the machine heads.+1 for that.I have very good experience with buttons change only on Schallers. Perloid or Ebony either way. Try this. It helps enough IMHO
mc2 Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 You guys are thinking backwards.....lighter buttons make some difference....but add weight TO THE BODY END to get rid of the neck dive.4 inch WIDE leather strap and some brass in the control cavity or on the tail button will get rid of it and still keep the bass sounding the same with the original tuners. Gluing a heavy brass plate to the inside of the control cavity plate is the most inconspicuous.
Tres Aardvarks Posted November 3, 2014 Author Posted November 3, 2014 I'd rather do it without adding weight, but maybe I'll try that first..I have lead tape (for weighting golf clubs), suppose that could be used too (I'm not putting tungsten powder in the control cavity)
