I just spoke with a friend who is on the road. He's made a living in Nashville for many years playing in big name road bands, on records, demos, showcases etc....

He's been playing a Tyler as his main axe for years and just decided he pretty much had to buy a Les Paul again. He tried a few and found a '58 historic plaintop that he liked enough to try. He's had it on the road for 3 weeks. 3 freaking weeks and the pickup selector switch crapped out on in him the middle of the rockingest portion of the show (I'm guessing there aren't that many because it's a county Christmas tour). He opens it up and finds that the switch cavity is barely big enough for the switch and the edge of the switch and wires are schmooshed together and over that three weeks, one of the prongs bent enough that it was shorting out. Still worked on the neck pickup only, but that ain't gonna cut it for this gig.

His comment was along the lines that all the posts about Gibson quality control are spot on. ;-)

He likes the guitar though and says it's pretty nice, though he thinks the overall quality should be a bit better for a custom shop instrument.

I am not a Gibson basher, but the first LP I bought in the 70's, brand new, had a very similar issue with the pickup selector. When I got it back from the shop, they somehow managed to put a nice solder iron burn from the reccess that holds the plastic cover, well into the body. Since I was young and stupid, I was too afraid to question the repair man about this, LOL.

And now that I am old and stupid, I would require the facility to make good on the extra artwork.

Although I think Gibson has done some really stupid things in recent years and that the current quality is not what it once was (by a LONG shot), there are some really nice Gibs out there. Call me crazy, but the best Gibsons I've owned (and it's been MANY) were made between 1988 and 1993. Hands down

Chris -- there may have been an ownership change right around that time... I seem to recall that the Explorer logos went from decals back to inlays in '89. Merely one example there, but I also recall guys like Blitz, and Steve McW raving about their '92 LP's, etc.

K-

i've got an early 80s GIBBER LESTER in silverburst. it's in player's condition with a very nice silverburst top, sides, back, and neck and head stock. although it is not labed a STUDIO, it was marketed as an 'XR-1' so it's '81 or '82. slim neck and one of those phase, single-coil switches. all original with the famous 'dirty fingers' pups from the tim shaw era. i have two xr-1; one's in goldburst and the other in silverburst.

$1250 shipped to ya in livermore.

pictures if you have money...

I just sent a rare, near-mint 1980 Yamaha SL550 Studio Lord (dead-ringer Les Paul replica, complete with correct Gibson headstock shape that resulted in lawsuit,) to BCR Music for consignment sale. It weighs 9 lbs., has 60's slim-taper neck profile. Retro-fitted with 2 Bill Lawrence double-cream humbuckers, with coil-taps (push-push tone controls.) Neck is much like a Firebird profile, which I haven't been able to get used to. I've come to prefer a chunky '58-'59 style"U," to "soft V" shape, profile. It is a beautiful, extremely resonant guitar priced at under a grand.... w/HSC. Let me know if you want to see pics. Or, contact BCRGreg for more details.

Or, you might consider one of these ("Edwards," LP copy made in Japan by ESP)

Extremely nice, maple top on mahoghany, built with USA Seymour Duncan p/ups, CTS pots & switches. I got one several months ago brand new, for around $750. in '59 burst, flame maple top,

I tried to upload photos but it won't take them for some reason, even though they are only 33 - 38k in size.
