What is the guitar/amp/effect combo used for the guitar leads in the song Blue on Black by Kenny Wayne Shepard? I've also heard a similar tone on some of SRV's leads. It sounds almost like there's an octave higher overtone or something - I can't quite put my finger on it but I really like the sound.

That's an Octavia or a clone of it. It puts a ghost-like one-octave-up on the notes plus a layer of fuzz. They are tricky effects - they prefer single coils, they prefer the neck position pickup, they prefer you turn the guitar down from dimed and they prefer that you play lightly in the mid- to upper regions of the neck to get the most "cool" out of the effect.

The two best Octavia clones I've owned are the Voodoo Labs Proctavia and a Katanasounds Venomous Snake, which is an uber-rare pedal in the U.S. I'm actually selling the latter on my store's Reverb page because I'm chopping my board down to bare basics.https://reverb.com/item/1499588-katanasound-venomous-snake-fuzz-octavia-ec-low-sn.

7ou can get close with a good trem effect, but the Univibe octave thing will nail it.

Opinions are as diverse as they come, but I absolutely hate that lead tone. Sounds like he played it through a G-Blaster or a boom box. I otherwise like that song a lot, but wish he'd re-record it using a different signal chain.

It's an octave fuzz for sure. I think he used the Chicago Iron copy of the Mayer Octavia. I currently use a Danelectro french toast for that effect. I've had the Procatavia in the past, its great but it needs another OD to work best IMO. The french toast coast me 15 bucks and just RIPS that tone on its own
