Wierd String Buzzing on My Talladega

Question

Hi,

I hope someone here can help  me because I'm at my wits end.

I bought a very nice Talladega from a I guy that I believe is a member here, none of which is important. I've had it for approximately a year. The guitar is in excellent condition and is the most valuable guitar that I own. As such I don't play it too much and my guitars are always kept in climate controlled environments in their cases.

I noticed however, that the last few times that I did play it there was a a God-awful buzz from the A and G strings when played open. It's not a fret buzz, it's a metallic buzz like there's something loose. So, I played the guitar more infrequently. I don't monkey with this guitar and wound up taking it to one the best luthiers here in central New Jersey. After a full, thorough set up and evaluation I got my guitar back yesterday and no (or very, very minimal buzz) anymore.

Last night I played the guitar and the more I played the open strings the more and more this buzz on the same two strings got more and more pronounced.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Where is the buzz coming from?  Is the buzzing persistent?  Intermittent?  Does it occur regardless of what frets you're playing?

stratitus. lower the pups, or pole pieces under the strings that rattle till the buzz diminishes.

Persistant, only open strings not fretted.

check the nut slot too, for height per string as well as rounded out slot(s) per string.

It sounds like there's buzz at the 1st fret.  I'm assuming that the set up included checking/setting neck relief.  Maybe the nut's cut too low for the string gauge that you're using.  Try pressing at the 3rd fret to see if the string's touching the 1st fret.

I lowered the pickups and that has provided some relief from the buzzing. When I press the 3rd fret neither of these two strings are hitting/resting on the first fret. Curious.

Did the Tally's come with 10 gauge or 11 gauge strings?

With a scale length of 25.5 , Tallys were not likely to be sporting 11s.  I wouldn't be surprised if they came with 9s.

Replace the weird string with a normal string.

Sorry,    Couldn't resist.

Check the saddles on the bridge and the whole bridge assembly.

check the nut also.

hit the strings and push down on the string at the nut

Do the same where the string goes over the saddle on the bridge.

See if the buzz goes away.

Bridges that have springs can get spring rattle too.

It's got a sustain block. The saddles can rattle too. Carl Verheyen ties them all together with a copper wire.

The pickups can rattle within the frame. Once I had wrapped the pickups with scotch tape.

Strings loose tension in a while. A replacement is always helpful.

One other suggestion: does it have a Gibson-style pup selector? They can set to vibrating in the middle position, if the metal connectors are not tensioned enough.

Especially with a Hamer USA.

Hamers' resonate better and play louder acoustically, so theirs a good change of vibration.
