Need Speaker Suggestion: Small 1x12

Ok running a WGS ET-65 in my full-size 1x12 open back and 2 WGS Reapers in my Closed back. Just acquired a MINI 1x12 and when I mean MINI this thing is small. Came with an EMI Red White and Blues. Sounds like a stiff speaker in a box, I want the cab to have a big sound but need a wider pallet than the RWB. Speaker was dark, lack highs and stiff on the bottom end.

Speakers floating around in my suggestion box already. EMI Man O War, EMI Lucky Lady, WGS HP Reaper, WGS Veteran OR Retro 30. Celestion Creamback. Currently I'm favoring English Speakers.

I think the Lucky Lady is a Sleeper, I had one in a EPI 1x12 and used it with my Fuchs, it was very focused and tight.

So : Mini 1x12 open back

Current Speaker: Eminence RWB.

Suggestions?

Just put a new alnico Celestion (Cream) into a small 1 x 12 open back....Probably not as small as yours. I like it the way it is, straight outta the box, though it could likely improve with more break in time. The consensus seems to be that, if you like the Celestion Blue, this will be very similar, but with a 90 watt (rather than 15 watt) rating.

Downside is the alnicos are pricey, though there is at least one place that consistently gives good discounts off the "street price".

Cannabis Rex is  nice choice; it performs well in small Fender DRs nicely. I'm presuming it's an open back? If this is to run with your BJ21, I would go either C-Rex or Creamback, leaning more toward C-Rex.

Yes, i'm pretty sure i'll have a hard time finding another amp to beat the 21. Matter of fact, i'm not really looking for one. Trying to unload some stuff to get another cab. :)

The C-Rex is another good choice. I'd give it another whirl.

Emi Red Fang, Weber Blue Dog, Emi Texas Heat....I hated the RWB too....dark like a blanket...

Celestion G12h30 or WGS Reaper....all good open back choices.

The HP Reaper was a little warmer, little fuller when I tried it compared to the Reaper and the ET65. At this point I hadn't considered an Alnico Speaker but maybe I should.

What amps will be pushing this cab?

I just completely the "rebuild" of the two open back "VHT" cabinets. (Will try to post pictures of the mods separately). On the small side and open back. In one I installed a new Alnico Cream, in the other a Mojotone clone of the G12H30 (broken in). I think they both sound really good. The Cream is more to my liking. I tend to agree with the other reviews that cite a "vintage warm" sound with "good chime".

Nothing at all wrong with the Mojotone. It seems to have a "less smooth" bottom end and more accent in the higher mid-range. Def seems to "cut through" better. I would tend to think of it as more the "classic rocker", with the Cream seeming to add less coloration.

Despite the 90 watt rating, I did not need to use a lot of power to get to the tones I was seeking.

I'm just digging different cabinets at the moment. Almost as fun as a different amp or pedals.

Try a British type alnico...less punchy than ceramic, but sweeter, especially in the highs. Very musical.

Got a little-used Celestion Blue in a box if you'd like to give that a whirl.

I have a creamback in a small 1 x 12 closed back...  love it.  warm and big for a 1 x 12

Velorush has a very possible answer....

It is a delicate waif of a speaker (compared to the brute BJ21), but it would sound great just before it flew to bits!

Is there any better suggestion than the creamback?

Well, i'm going to try the WGS REAPER HP first, then, the Creamback if that doesn't work for me. What about the gold? I have to have 8ohm speaker because I don't have a 16ohm tap on the BJ21 MK1.

I have the Gold (8 ohm) in a Swart AST (about 18 watts). Love it. The Cream (Alnico, not "Creamback") is rated at 90 watts. Many seem to agree it is voiced more like the Blue than the Gold and is only about $10 more. Thus far I am loving it with a "lower powered" amp.

A bunch and well documented. We are not done yet, he wants me to play it for week and let him know what I think. After swapping it to MY cabinets tonight this thing is gainy and a little less muscle in single notes than with my MKII. Kinda like driving a Supercar, which is what I hear a Trainwreck is like. I still have to break out the EBMM and try it, the tech insisted that the magic really comes when you stick a Strat in front of it. I'll have to try the Mira since it has a lower output pickups in it. A semi hollow with under wounds would probably sound great.
