Anyone using a stand-alone DVR?

With our DirecTV bill approaching $120 a month, we are (finally!) looking at alternatives. The biggest obstacle is the convenience of that damn DVR. It's just too nice to be able to FF through endless commercials and other random crap.

We just started streaming Amazon Prime and will probably get Netflix next, but the little woman wants to record stuff and I agree 100% (that hasn't happened since.....well, ever).

What do you recommend?

If you go with a service like Playstation Vue it has a free cloud DVR. 100 channels + DVR - Not bad for $45/mo. Since our area doesn't have live network channels with Vue (FYI, $55/mo if yours does), we're SOL for recording OTA network broadcasts, but with our AppleTV we can stream all the network shows after the fact, so it's not an issue. Of course, you still have to watch at least one commercial during the breaks when streaming the major networks.

Vue is available for PS3/4, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, plus the latest AppleTV and you need to have a decently fast internet connection.

Dropping DTV was the best thing we ever did and we don't miss it one bit.

You may looking into getting android TV box with KODI loaded.  If you have KODI (a program) with Exodus (an add-on) you can access most things television and cinema at no cost.  Of course, to keep it legal you have to maintain subscriptions that provide you any content you access.

There are ways to download and save things, but with everything already at your fingertips there's not much reason to save things.

It's tough to see what it does until you actually have it.  If you're interested and have questions shoot me a PM.

Great topic, and I have the same thoughts and concerns as the OP.

Cynic, the Android TV box was new to me so thanks for mentioning it.  I took a quick look at some but it looks like I have some major research to do.

I'm also tired of Directv. My bill went up 20 bucks. And since AT&T took over customer service sucks.

Speaking of customer service, we had an issue last night so my wife called them. We could understand about half of what he said because every other word was 'AT&T'.

If we're still with them by the end of the month I'll be surprised.

I'm was leaning towards this:

...because it seemed easy enough for my wife to handle. But since it'll only record OTA content and not streamed stuff, it seems kinda pointless for the hour or so of local news I watch.

Still looking....
