Tune-o-matic Bridge and Intonation?

rugby1970

Question

Just purchased a lovely 2004 Artist Korina here with a Tune-o-matic bridge but I just can't get this puppy intonated. I looked on line and the examples I saw have the screw heads facing the pickup (neck direction). Mine has the screw heads facing the stop tail/lower bail. Which is correct? Does it make a difference? Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

It really makes no difference. All mine have the screws facing the tail piece.

(Most) saddles have a slant side and a flat side. Chances are the slant side is facing away from the neck meaning you have less adjustment. In this case, I remove the spring retainer and unscrew the saddle screw then I turn the saddle around (180 degrees). Then you will have the flat side furthest away from the neck. This gives you around 2mm extra adjustment (meaning you can lengthen the scale by an extra 2mm). This will enable you to set intonation correctly. Also, string guage effects intonation. I believe if you use a lower tuning, you need to use a heavier guage string to compensate for this...

Have new strings on? First option to check.

Check the cuts in the saddles. It's possible that the bridge was flipped around. I had that problem on my H150CM (thanks wolfe guitars!) and couldn't figure out why the intonation sucked until I noticed that the High E string saddle slot was HUGE, and the low E was sitting on top of the saddle.

How old are the strings on it?
