WTB: Gibson Witch Hat knobs for Flying V

Recommended Posts

Posted

Looking for two volumes and one tone knob.  Need silver insert Gibson witch hats.  Originals at an elevated price isn't a problem.  The reissue knobs on my 1981 White Flying V with block inlays are not period correct.  The font is all wrong.

Anyone have a lead or some knobs they might sell?

Thanks.

Like these? I have these three laying around. Old, I think they are original Gibsons but I am not sure. They are silver, but in certain light conditions they tend to have a gold tint.

Got a pic of the "wrong" font on the reissues you want to replace? I have three that came along with my Superpro in the case... certainly not vintage, but possibly closer to what you seek. I'd be willing to drop em in the mail for free or for a set of 3 amber top hats (no silver inserts) to replace the gold ones it arrived wearing. The original ambers must have either suffered the fatal "Hamer knob crack" or been lost in the Great Knob Swap Experiment it once endured!

Ok... sorry, but mine look more like the ones Disturber posted above. That is a killer V reissue you got, there! Good luck with the knob hunt!

Found some at the aforementioned "elevated price," but gold inserts.  https://reverb.com/uk/item/10170087-vintage-original-1967-71-gibson-witch-hat-knobs-for-les-paul-custom

These purport to be from '72 with silver inserts (and also "elevated price") https://reverb.com/item/34266183-gibson-witch-hat-knobs-4-1972-black-silver  Those appear to be in really good shape.

A bit cheaper (still "elevated") and with cool patina, supposedly '65: https://reverb.com/item/34451406-gibson-volume-tone-knobs-set-c-1965-silver-witch-top-hat-original-vintage-usa-vol-tone

and these from '66: https://reverb.com/item/33056362-gibson-witch-hat-vol-tone-knobs-1966-original-vintage-usa-top-hat-es335-es175

Hope this helps.

Thanks.  I saw all of those.  I'm just a little gun shy.  Fifty a knob is a little stiff for me.

No, I completely agree!  I'm cheap enough for "good enough," but the, for lack of a better word, splendor of that V and the cost of the knobs relative the (perceived, and happily none of my business) cost of such a machine relative the price of the vintage knobs I thought, "ah, maybe it would make sense..."

You know, these from AllParts might work fine until a more reasonably-priced period-correct option comes up (eight bucks).  AllParts makes a Tone knob, as well - PK-3242.

The SF Fender amp knobs won't work as they have a set screw.

I bought two AllParts Volume knobs on one Reverb sale and one AllParts Tone knob on another Reverb sale.  They aren't "correct", but they're way better than Gibson's pathetic attempt on this killer guitar.

Thanks to all.  You guy's never disappoint.

Well, shit.  The All Parts knobs are exactly the same as the knobs on the guitar.  I don't think there are repro knobs that are even close.  I just can't pay fifty a knob.  And I'll have to buy four, if I do.
