Imiss85 Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Will turning a righty guitar into a lefty affect the Truss rod? I never thought it would, but got into a rather heated argument with a friend over it as he says it will warp the neck. I don't get it, but am always open to the fact that I could be wrong... So can it? What other mods other than the bridge would have to be done?
Guest Mike Lee Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 No it won't affect the truss rod and it will not warp the neck. You need to install a new nut and adjust the bridge intonation, which *may* be possible without changing the bridge (Strats & Teles OK, TOM's maybe, Junior style wraptails probably not). Then you have to adapt to having the knobs and cutaways in the wrong places.
Imiss85 Posted March 29, 2006 Author Posted March 29, 2006 Thanks. BTW... Don't ya love it when you are right?
tomteriffic Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Thanks. BTW... Don't ya love it when you are right? Mike loves it when he's left.
Steve Haynie Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 What kind of guitar are you trying to flip around?
serial Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Amputation of the right arm will make ya a lefty quick.
BadgerDave Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 And don't forget that the side fret position markers will now be on the side of the neck facing the floor. Which makes them really hard to see!!
Imiss85 Posted March 30, 2006 Author Posted March 30, 2006 very true. I'm not switching anything, but we were talking about a Lefty that was in a Pawn shop, it could be bought and turned around. Like I said, it was a 15 minute argument on the neck. He came up with this story of a tech in a shop near Chicago that had a strat that was flipped, and it warped the neck because of the string tension. Like I said, I know it was complete BS, but just wanted to be reassured.
Guest Mike Lee Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 It really bugs me when a righty buys a lefty guitar and plays it backwards so they can look like a mirror image of Jimi Hendrix. There aren't that many lefty guitars out there, and it pains me to see them taken out of circulation this way. There are plenty of righty guitars out there - enjoy them and leave the lefties to those of us that need them.
Steve Haynie Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I hate the people who string an acoustic backwards. The bracing under the top is wrong, and the bridge is slanted wrong. The guitar will never sound right or play in tune. It shows up big time!
Andrew Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I stand to be corrected, but I think that Hamer carves the fingerboard such that it is cambered a little more on the bass side which isn't a big problem but may feel a little odd when reverse strung. However, the truss rod runs down the middle so it matters not one bit which way up it is strung!Andrew.
Guest LMB682 Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I have one of those left handed ones who play right handed:)
Jason01 Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I'm with Mike, it bugs the hell out of me to see righties playing lefty guitars cause they want to be Jimi or whatever and taking them out of circulation for those of us that are actually looking for them. I wanted to go to the Fender plant and go on a shooting spree when they came out with that Jimi Hendrix model with the lefty body strung up right handed and the backward logo and all that. We're usually stuck with cheap black low end models when a manufacturer decides to throw us a bone and make a left handed version of a guitar and I'd go in to a store and see this nice white lefty strat on the wall and it would be strung up right handed and I'd get pissed off. Whats the lefty in the pawn shop you guys are looking at anyway?
Guest big steve Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 well, with the two hamers i had made for me,it took an $500.00 upcharge!
Imiss85 Posted April 1, 2006 Author Posted April 1, 2006 "I'm with Mike, it bugs the hell out of me to see righties playing lefty guitars cause they want to be Jimi or whatever and taking them out of circulation for those of us that are actually looking for them."As far as it goes ...FIRST, I never said I was going to buy it.. .But , since my money is just as green as anyone elses, and this is America, maybe I will. Second, if I do, It's not to look like Jimi or anyone else. It would be because I wanted to buy it. Too many people enjoy the soapbox I guess. Peace.
Jason01 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 I was simply trying to convey my frustration at going into guitar shop after guitar shop and during that period where fender was making those jimi strats the only lefty guitar I would see up on the wall was actually made for the right handed people as well. This is a free country and you're certainly entitled to buy as many lefty guitars as you want, you might want to check out southpaw guitars in Houston and you can grab as many as you want. If its not about the Jimi thing then how come I never see right handed people playing anything upside down other than a strat? I can't recall any other company marketing a left handed guitar upside down for right handed people, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Imiss85 Posted April 2, 2006 Author Posted April 2, 2006 Probably because a Tele would be very difficult to play upside down. The cutaways in a strat makes it easier.
Pr3Va1L Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 For lefties out there, try Carvin...No upcharge for their lefty guitars, and they make real good guitars.
